The First Supermoon of 2018 Arrives on New Year's Day

The new year will be off to a celestial start with the appearance of a bigger and brighter supermoon — this time nicknamed the “wolf moon.”

The supermoon is a nickname of its own, referring to a full moon that appears larger and more luminous due to its increased proximity to the Earth. The wolf moon, however, refers to the first full moon of the new year, which so happens to fall on New Year’s Day this time around, according to NASA.

The second of a “supermoon trilogy” that began with a supermoon at this beginning of this month, the New Year’s supermoon should look about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual, the space agency reports. The final installment of the supermoon series will kick off on Jan. 31, which will be “extra special,” NASA says.

My daughter picked a Toy Poodle for a pet and named her Luna (we will take her home in January after she is 8 weeks old). Next Day President Trump announced the USA is going back to the moon. Now these moons are coming. Coincidence? Maybe.

A Shreveport cop I used to know (he usually worked the graveyard shift) said that a full moon payday weekend was always “very active.”

Back in another life when I worked for wages, one of the places I used to work was owned and run by three brothers originally from Oregon. Well, they had a tad of Indian (as in Native American) Blood in them.

You could always tell an approaching full moon from how they acted.

no full moon in February. But also 2 in March

That is a bit more rare than a Blue Moon (which happens on average every 3 1/2 years), and a “No-Moon” month happens about once every 19 years. The last time February didn’t have a full Moon was in 1999 and then again in 1980.

A blue moon is, commonly, the second full moon in a month.

January and March have blue moons...

As long as we can play old recordings, we will always have the Super Moon.

I’m with you on this.

It’s the moon, people. It’s been doing exactly this from time immemorial. Re-naming something just because it’s occurring during an arbitrarily named time frame doesn’t make it different, nor does it make you smart, it is a waste of everyone’s time.
