President Trump Should Let Chuck And Nancy Have Their Government Shut-Down
DB Daily Update ^ | 12.7.2017 | David Blackmon

With Chuck Schumer and San Fran Nan threatening to shut down the government because they want amnesty for all the “Dreamers”, weak-kneed Republicans in congress are running scared because they know the fake news media will put the blame for the shut-down on them.

My question to them is, so what? Have you learned nothing from history? The last time the Republicans got blamed by the fake news media for shutting down the federal government was 2013, when Ted Cruz single-handedly dragged the party kicking and screaming to negotiate something meaningful into the budget bill under consideration at the time. 14 months later, the GOP went on to win a massive tidal wave victory in the next mid-term congressional elections in 2014. Why? Because by shutting down the government, even for just a few days, Republicans in congress energized their base by demonstrating they actually do have the ability to stand for something.

This is a potential teaching moment for President Trump. There is no doubt his instinct will be to let Chuck and Nancy shut the government down if they want to, and then get on this Twitter feed and pound them for as long as it lasts. That’s exactly what he should do, for the benefit of the Republican Party and the country.

The Republicans in congress have been repeating this exact failed strategy in budget negotiations for far too long. It’s up to President Trump to stop the insanity. Shut. It. Down.

“...Let Chuck and Nancy have their government shutdown...”

Agree. Let the bare bones essential gov’t functions continue and the bloated bureaucracy that is the US federal government will be unmasked for all to see.

I was not aware that the Dems had won the Senate.

President Trump Should Let Chuck And Nancy Have Their Government Shut-Down

The Republicans have a 47 seat majority in the House, a 2 seat majority in the Senate, and the White House. Why is this Chuck and Nancy's shutdown and not Mitch and Paul's?

Pelousey and Schmuck have terrible negotiating skills, or just don't grasp the concept of leverage at all: "If you don't let us increase the size of government and waste more money, we'll shut dow the government and you won't be able to waste more money"

President Trump: "Okay. Terrific! Thanks for coming by."

I disagree. Trump should publicly state that he is for DACA as well as a path to citizenship for everyone approved for DACA. And they will get their path to citizenship as soon as the wall is completed.

Now Democrats are on the hook. They either approve the wall or are exposed as anti-American, open borders, pro-crime, socialists who only want illegal alien votes. And the illegals here don’t care about America, only the benefits they can steal from the states.

Foe Trump it is win win. There is no way every illegal is returning to their home country regardless how we feel about it. Might as well get the wall built and ensure never again will we have a wave of mass illegal immigration.

Yes.
I think it becomes increasingly obvious that our politicians have no political skill. No negotiation skill. No diplomatic skill.
Their skill is in one thing: they know how to get elected.
They do not know how to govern, how to write laws (they have lobbyists do that for them) and they cannot work with others to reach agreement on common problems.

But that real estate guy from NYC? Best politician I’ve seen in my lifetime.

Use political ju-jitsu...use their own “weight” against them. Sometimes, when people are pushing hard against you, the best play is to just “move”, and let them fall on their face.

If their purported “consequences” have no effect, then their ploy was for naught.

Shut it down, the only people it’s really a crisis to, are the dems in congress (and perhaps the media)...but only the media can create a “media frenzy”.

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

I think they understand the concept of leverage very well: they have it and Trump doesn't. The only reason they have come crawling to Pelosi and Schumer to begin with is that neither Ryan and McConnell can control their own membership enough to pass the funding resolution with Republicans alone. They need the Democrats and not the other way around. So sure there will be a price to be paid.

Why does Trump need Dems to build a wall?

Shutting it down would have many benefits. Saving the tax dollar. Showing we don’t need 89.5% of it. Putting the ball back in the whiny demonrats’ court.

I’m not sure if you are simply being contrary or if the question is serious, but here is my answer:

Chuck and Nancy are the ones coming to the table with “iron clad” demands that have nothing to do with the continuity of government function. More accurately, they are refusing to come to the table unless their demands are capitulated to before negotiations start.

Assuming that the republicans can hold together every single vote, the Senate still cannot overcome a democrat filibuster under the current rules. While I do not believe that the rules should remain as they are, the reality is that Chuck and Nancy are the ones playing chicken with the process - so they are the ones who should be “credited” with the obstruction they espouse.

Government employees: Essential = almost useless, Non-essential = totally useless.*

*Some military personnel exempted.

Actually, I’d love to see a government shutdown. With a President Trump, we could see one done right. He could demonstrate just what has to be continued and what can be shut right down. He could show what real fairness looks like without all the bureaucratic rules hemming him in as much as usual. Let this be a big teaching experience taught by the best professor of government - a user of it and not a lifelong dependent.

60 votes in the senate. This is not complicated, really.

May I be pedantic for a mo?

Aaaaargh. The government does NOT shut down. Amazingly large portions of Fedzilla are deemed essential and continue functioning. Damn it.

We won’t default, either, since we can still make our debt payments with the cash coming in every month.

Shutdown? I wish.

He doesn’t, but he needs to put the swamp on record.

Yes, I know all of that, but I try to keep these daily pieces below 1,000 words. In reality, only about 13% of the federal government would actually be “shut down”.
