Is the ATM Machine Bulletproof?
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 11/30/2017 | J Hines

Ever wonder if the ATM machines are bulletproof? Maybe they are as you can see most ATM don’t have bullets holes in it.
Youtuber Edwin Sarkissian gets a hold of a surplus one and does some testing to see what happens if you shoot at it with different calibers.

Results
-9mm, 116 grain – one round out of three didn’t penetrate, no exit on the other side.
-44 Magnum Desert Eagle, hollow points – same results as 9mm.
-AK 7.62×9 – only one round went through the whole ATM machine.
-.50 Cal – All rounds went through the ATM

These basic ATM machines have reinforced interior around the cash machine portion to help deter Joe Crook from the cold hard cash. Wasn’t design to withstand bullets of any kind.
In this test most rounds (except for the .50) didn’t go through the ATM. You obviously can use the ATM machine as cover for personal defense. See the full footage of this bulletproof ATM video here.

Why do people say and write ATM ‘MACHINE’?

Most people don't know that ATM means Automated TELLER Machine, so that they don't know they are writing, "Automated Teller Machine Machine".

They just want you to know that it is a machine...machine.

Well, I learned that if the bad guy is shooting with less than .50 caliber, I can hide behind an ATM. If he has a Barrett I'm toast.

Always good to learn new things...

Worked at company which serviced ATM

Had one guy whose job it was that when new model machine
came out he was to “test” it

Would shake, pound and kick the machine while cursing at it

Cram pen, pencils, crayons in slots to see if would jam

Really got into it Was fun to watch

Didn’t shoot a machine.....

As a person with some background in metal fabrication, I’ve taken casual notice of the fabrication, assembly, and materials used in these machines. I didn’t need to take one out to the desert to determine that they are highly bullet-resistant just by their design and materials. The testing chart in your OP certainly validates my casual observation.

They do seem to be constructed out of steel that is much harder than mild steel, I’d say it approaches armored/ballistic steel. But the sides are like 1/4”, so it’s not stopping a .50 cal any day.

Not mild steel - that is a hot-rolled process to produce the shape/thickness. It’s cold-rolled steel which is done with pure power/weight/hydraulics to create the thickness. The process causes a unique change to the granular structure of the metal and makes it much harder for its actual thickness.
