Montana Elk Hunter gets 90 Stitches From Grizzly Bear Attack

Wow. I can’t believe the bear knows how to sew. Mighty considerate of it, though.

I read, long ago, that if attacked by a bear, shoot for a front shoulder to disable it. True?

No.

Shoot your hunting buddy in the knee and run.

“I read, long ago, that if attacked by a bear, shoot for a front shoulder to disable it. True?”

I don’t know.

I used birdshot once. Didn’t do much. He just came faster. That last one did him in at 4 ft. (It was the 2nd one) Close enough that the pattern was pretty tight. Even the wadding made it in.

It took my friend and his son to down a Kodiak last year with 5 shots of assorted loads, from a high powered rifle, to shotgun slugs, and last one was a .44 magnum I believe.

Bear spray on a charging grizzly? If that’s all you have. Ok then.

It’s bow season here in Montana. Rifle season starts next month.

I use a 7mm mag on elk with a back up pistol for bears, 44mag.

How much time do you have to react to a 30 yard grizzly charge? Maybe two or three seconds before he's on top of you. And he is REALLY pi$$ed because he doesn't like pepper on his meals. Pretty hard to think under those circumstances and not something you can really practice for.

Makes one realize what Jedediah Smith and Hugh Glass went through in the early 1800s.

Another bear spray failure. The bear charged through a cloud of spray to get at Sommer. Because Sommer fumbled with his spray for precious seconds, he did not draw his handgun in time.

When finally the bear retreated after being bear sprayed (from two feet!), Sommers managed to fire a shot at the bear.

So we do not know if it were bear spray or the shot that kept the bear from returning.

I do not think any rifles were involved. The men were bow hunting.

What morons. Instead of leaving the bear to enjoy her dinner, they yelled at her. Did they ask her politely to stand still while they ran in circles and tried to spray her? Sure, some big bad hunters who decide to use a hand gun on a bear. Stupid is as stupid does.

I don’t have time to find a link, but reading the Lewis and Clark journal descriptions of encountering Grizzly bears is priceless. I would recommend that for anyone interested.

Agreed, poor tactical decision; however, most Fish and Game/Conservation depts. require a thorough investigation and clearly warn hunters about shooting bears or lions unless they are absolutely sure they will be mauled. Bears often make false charges ending feet or yards short of the person. gotta make a call, shoot early and the evidence does not support ( how convenient, a liberal DNC that intends to prosecute bear killers) your risk. Loss of hunting privileges in most states ( they all collude and enjoy reciprocity of hunting privilege bans).

Me, I think I’d shoot early rather than be bear toy.

Bear spay, I don’t think I ‘d even bother carrying it, other than to show “good faith”.

The “conventional wisdom” is to make noise to let the bear “know you are there”.

Looks like bad advice in this case.

Anyone who hunts should never be surprised when the animals hunt you back.

Yes, BREAK BONES! A disabled bear is a good bear.

Works for Florida looters too! :-)
