The middle class is clinging to the idea that people have some measure of control over their own destiny, unlike so many in the lower class who would gladly trade their freedoms and independence in exchange for being cared for like livestock (housed, fed, etc. by others). The upper class looking to control all find the remnants of our middle class a bothersome thorn in their sides.
