In a Katrina-like situation, you’ll need a shotgun to defend your home, and maybe an AR-15 or shotgun to secure the road-block at the end of your street along with your neighbors.

I’m a big fan of silencers. My silenced .308 still goes “boom”, almost like a .22. The silenced .22 though sounds like something mechanical, the action cycling, not like a gun.
I’ll go with the shotgun for home defense, probably with a red-dot sight just because I’m not good with a shotgun and it is possible to miss even with buckshot. I’ll agree with the AR-15 or even AR-10 with optics for defense at a distance. But my bet is on stealth over firepower for the most part, and on a good knife as the final backup.

His point was, even if its chaos, you’re still living in a city. If you have to use your weapon, you don’t want to attract a crowd and most especially you don’t want to deal with cops afterward. Because in a SHTF city the cops are not your friend. Of course he was writing from South America, but post Katrina the cops were as much a problem as anything, from things I’ve seen.

.22 air rifle with repair kit. For acquiring small game as there won’t be any deer around after 3 to 5 weeks.
.38, .357 , 44 mag or .45 lc single action revolver. Easily maintained or repaired. No jams.
(straight wall cases can be reloaded forever and they shoot bp very well.)
Manual reloading outfits for above. Lee reloader (whack a mole). They can be carried in your back pocket.

Reliability is the key, particularly for medium to long term SHTF. The most important skill is getting away from the action unhurt.

The best rifle or shotgun in the world does you no good if you can’t carry enough ammo to feed it for a while. How much does 1000 rounds of .22LR weigh compared to 1000 rounds of anything else?
The answer is very situational.
Are you in fortress mode at home?
Are you hiking away from a population center.
Driving?
If you’re in a single family home, I recommend staying there, as it’s nearly impossible to take everything you’ll need for any length of time.

Go get a .357 revolver, you can fire .38’s but always can switch to .357 when required.... cast bullets for both....

AR15, short barrel 12 gauge magnum, .357 magnum revolver. For the perimeter, I like jetted gasoline to spray the enemy then shoot a tracer round.
