Debunking the Suppressors Myth
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 6/13/2017 | Christian Wade

Posted on 06/13/2017 5:55:07 AM PDT by w1n1

There are some myths about suppressors out there. Most of these myths comes from gun owners that don't own a suppressor or from playing the video game "Call of Duty". One of the myth is the ineffectiveness impact of the weapon. Fortunately, we have United States Marine Corps Gunner Christian Wade to set the record straight.

Gunner Christian Wade is a Chief Warrant Officer 5 and is the Gunner for the 2nd Marine Division, literally making him an expert on small arms and their employment. I don't know about you, but I can't think of a better source for reliable information regarding the employment of suppressors by the Marine Corps and busting some common suppressor myths than him. Have a look at this suppressor footage USMC style, Hooya!

How many people buy the Hollywood silencers as the real thing? Sadly I would think plenty. I think they should show where the sound effect used in movies for suppressors comes from. It might help. Hange some thinking. Wonder if myth busters ever fired a suppressed weapon to show what it would really sound like.

Already most of my shooting is done suppressed. If the Hearing Protection Act of 2017 passes, I will go to more than 90% suppressed shooting. Exceptions will probably be revolvers and a few other old or very small guns, maybe my Remington 870, and my 1911 that I don’t want to mess up the balance on, but mostly I shoot better suppressed and think it is more considerate of others. I’d even like to get short suppressors to take 15 or so db off the Glock and a few other semi-auto pistols if I don’t have to pay for that silly tax stamp.

Note: As impressive as that Barrett .50 cal is, I really don’t like shooting when it’s anywhere but the far end of the range, or preferably at someone’s home.

I'm real happy with my Griffin Alpha on a .308. Makes a standard 308 Winchester round sound like a .22 long rifle.

Where the suppressor really shines with with subsonic ammo. Holy Cow!!

Suppressor Comparison

Forgive the maniacal chuckling on the first three rounds. Those were the very first three rounds with the can mounted and what you hear is pure joy!

Give it up. The suppressor law ain’t gonna happen. Remember the Seth Rich murder? Remember how the police found out? Yup, the new high tech audio locate systems installed, I am sure at great expense, in all the major urban areas. Wide spread availability of cheap suppressor would make all that hi tech infrastructure about worthless. And that is why it ain’t gonna happen.

Whether or not the gee-whiz audio locator tech works with suppressed weapons is largely irrelevant. It won't pass because the Dems have a cloture proof minority in the Senate. Without a “nuclear option” to kill the filibuster the Dems will vote enbloc to oppose any pro gun legislation.

Nonsense, they’ll just add more and better microphones. The capture of every conversation in an urban area is just ‘by catch’ and not the target of the system...

Where the suppressor really shines with with subsonic ammo.

Suppressors cannot suppress the sonic crack that comes from hi-powered rifles. Handguns fire sub-sonic and thus can be suppressed. Rifles, however, tend to fire super-sonic rounds (.22 notwithstanding). This is where the Call of Duty and Hollywood types have the most difficult time accepting the limitations of a suppressor.

Don’t forget that silencers allow .22LR to shoot-down airliners and satellites...

I know this will annoy the black rifle fans, but suppressors on AR15s/M16s funnel lots of noxious, ammonia filled gas into the firer’s face.

You literally gas yourself every trigger pull - follow on shots are hard to with your eyes watering and your choking and coughing.

Youtube has lots of examples of people shooting arms with suppressors. It is not live, but it gives you a good idea. I am sure there are some comparison videos shooting the same gun with and without suppressor.
