As a young guy learning the trade the travel was good - and fun. Doing environmental and engineering stuff, started off with a small company but worked from Vermont to Florida, Texas to Iowa, and most places in between.
Then went with a larger company (and larger jobs) which meant weeks and months out of town and overseas. It suck when my son was young. “Oh - so he walked today! That’s great!” I was never around.
Got laid off, and the day it happened I knew that was the best thing that could happen! Started off on my own and was able to be around most of the time. (Well, early on it was because I barely had any work! But with a new baby girl that was a good thing.)
Now I still get the occasional trip overseas, and a few weeks out-of-state at a time, but not the constant field work like before.
But for a young person gaining knowledge and getting to see places, it is pretty good.
Technical instructor for wireless networking and video management systems got me all over the US, Canada, two stops in both Copenhagen and Dubai, and one each in Tel Aviv, Zagreb, Instanbul and Ankara. Lots of Delta and Hilton upgrades as icing on the cake.
Only airports I’ve really felt molested are in the USA. We do a great job making the air travel experience extremely unpleasant. That and some of the people TSA employs are uniquely unpleasant individuals. There’s nothing like coming back to the USA, clearing passport control (where foreign visitor lines are often shorter than us citizen lines), and going back through security re-screening for the connecting flight and being screeched at by a giant TSA affirmative action hire, putting your hands up in the air in their nude tube, still being patted down, and having your bag checked for no reason ‘random’ to welcome you back home.
Some African airports can be irritating for other reasons, ie, they want bribes or they hand search your luggage in front of you to check if you’re bringing anything out that’s valuable that would be deserving of a bribe to them. There it’s just about money. Most though are not bad at all.
I am a graphic designer. It’s a perfect job ‘cause I don’t have to work from the office as it allows me to travel as much as I can. This month for instance I am going to Thailand, booked tickets a month ago on https://lowcostclub.ca/ . There I will finish my project and after will just relax :)
