Defense Secretary James Mattis’ unconventional choices for top Pentagon posts and his reluctance to aggressively push for dramatic increases in the defense budget have rankled Republicans on Capitol Hill who say he’s burning through political capital he needs as he begins reshaping the Pentagon.

But Republican lawmakers and senior congressional aides said in recent interviews they’re running out of patience with Mattis' staffing decisions, which have disappointed Republican members of the Senate Armed Services Committee hoping to see their ideological allies elevated to senior levels in the Defense Department. Others are grumbling about Mattis’ refusal to advocate a bigger increase in the defense budget, which defense hawks believe was gutted disastrously under President Barack Obama.
“He certainly has got a tough job, but it sometimes feels like he forgets that we won the election,” said one aide to a GOP senator on the Armed Services Committee, who declined to speak on the record for fear of publicly alienating the defense secretary.
“We’ve waited eight years for this, to be able to fill these posts with Republicans,” said another top GOP Hill staffer. “We know Trump isn’t part of the establishment and that it’s going to be a bit different, but it should go without saying that a Republican administration is expected to staff federal agencies with Republicans.”
Mattis has bristled at nominating people with political backgrounds, including Randy Forbes, a former Virginia congressman who was considered for secretary of the Navy, and former Missouri Sen. Jim Talent, a Republican with expertise in defense policy, whose name has been floated for several senior defense posts...

Good, if they’re frustrated he is clearly doing the right things. He knows that competent people come in various sizes, shapes, colors, and parties. They work for him.

I think General Norman Schwarzkopf was our last real general. And he quit because he read the writing on the wall with GHW Bush’s “New world order”, etc.
Remember him in his confirm hearing. Said gays in the military & women in combat were OK with him. He’s a west coast guy I don’t like. NO Patton in my assessment.
It is a fact that Mattis has advocated for these people. It is not just Politico. Where have you been? This has been reported for weeks now in dozens of publications including conservative publications. And your background in the military and civilian lends you no special knowledge as to whom Mattis wants in those positions.

I thought Mattis was a poor choice from day one. He talks gruff but he fundamentally misunderstands islam. How can you function as SecDef if you DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHO THE ENEMY IS.

I think everyone needs to cool their jets......Trumps knocked the bee hive pretty badly and their all jostling to find a place for themselves. Meanwhile Trumps working to get his agenda through with the willing....
This arena is a war arena that needs room to navigate regardless how it looks to us.....Trump and this team are going after the big boys so shifting positions and round pegs in square holes for a time shouldn’t surprise us......
Let Trump and his team work....we don’t really see what’s going on...only they do....
