Spicer: Trump ‘had some fun’ with Mark Meadows comment {Politico]

President Donald Trump was “having fun” when he told the leader of the House Freedom Caucus that he would come after him for not supporting the Obamacare replacement plan, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Tuesday.

“Mark Meadows is a longtime, early supporter of the president,” Spicer told reporters at Tuesday’s briefing. “He had some fun at his expense this morning during the conference meeting.”

During a rare trip to the Capitol, Trump singled out Meadows, who chairs the House Freedom Caucus, a conservative group with enough votes to potentially sink the GOP proposal.

“Mark, I’m gonna come after you” if you keep up the opposition, Trump said, according to multiple sources, one of whom cautioned that Trump was “half joking.”

In Spicer’s telling, Trump simply “continued to express hope that Congressman Meadows … would continue to see the efforts that have been made to make this better and address a lot of the concerns out there.”

“But he has made it very clear that he was having fun with him,” Spicer claimed. “The president’s committed to making sure that this gets passed.”

With a Thursday floor vote looming, Trump warned Republicans behind closed doors that many of them could lose their seats in the 2018 midterm elections if they fail to support the Obamacare repeal and replacement plan — a statement Spicer characterized as not a threat but rather the “political reality.”

“If we go out there and make these pledges to the American people and don’t do what we said we’ve done on these big things, then I don’t think they’re gonna continue to wanna see us in the majority and they’re gonna look for an alternative,” Spicer said.

Asked if Trump would take names of the dissenters, Spicer wouldn’t say.

He laughed. “We’ll see,” he said.

After giving this some thought I’ve changed my mind about what I believe Trump is doing here with this Ryan bill. I now believe that everything he has done has been done with the understanding that it doesn’t have a chance in hell of getting passed in the House.

I have thought from the start that Trump knew Ryancare was a RINO trap and he is giving Ryan enough rope to hang himself.

I listened to Dave Brat of Virginia yesterday afternoon. His demands were simple enough: add the phase 2 items to this which includes such things as ending required tests and coverage of procedures for everyone. The idea he said is to actually bend the costs down. Required tests and coverages help keep the cost high. [for example, cafeteria plans like we used to have enabled me to carry pregnancy coverage in my youth and not carry it in my later years...]

Supposedly the cost measures are going to be handled by Tom Price, but as Brat said: a future Secretary could change it all back. If its written into the law, its harder to do.

I am not sure what Ryan’s opposition is to it. It was hinted that if he did not add it, the bill might fail...I imagine Ryan is waiting to the 11th hour to see if he has the votes to pass it and if not will add it to pick up freedom caucus support.

Me? I don’t know if Trump knows enough about it...he keeps meeting with that zerocare architect, Immanuel{?}

Just not sure...sometimes it sounds like he is listening to the wrong voices and just wants to pass any bill to check it off the list., I pray thats not true.

I am surprised that Political ran with this article. Of course Trump was in jest when he said that.

“Trump warned Republicans behind closed doors that many of them could lose their seats in the 2018 midterm elections if they fail to support the Obamacare repeal and replacement plan — a statement Spicer characterized as not a threat but rather the ‘political reality.’”

I think the “political reality” is that congress critters could lose their seats if, after going through the show votes for repeal of ObummerCare for years, they now offer up a replacement bill that’s only marginally better, if that.

Drive a heart through ObummerCare and then adopt a bill that is private market driven. Reverse the Medicaid expansion. If the states which chose to expand Medicaid want to keep it, fine. Let them pay for it. At $20 trillion in debt, Fedzilla is in no position to keep promising “free this” and “free that”.

Even when I was not a Trump supporter early in the GOP primaries last year, I knew that man well enough to know that he never does anything in his life just to "check off a box."

This is the type of man who could put things like "Build a 100-story building," "Own 4 pro sports teams," and "Live in the White House for eight years" on his list of things to accomplish in his life ... but even for THESE things he'd never pursue them without being 100% immersed in them.

I SOOO want you to be right.

Its just the bill currently proposed is still zerocare without the mandate...instead there is a 30% surcharge for a year...
AND I understand Trump supports it. Its way too lacking.

From what I know and I am sure that’s not alot, its just not the repeal THEN replace we were promised.
