President Trump’s Conservative Budget
The Resurgent ^ | March 16, 2017 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 03/16/2017 9:53:18 PM PDT by TBP

President Trump has released his budget. It would spend $1.1 trillion in 2018 and increase military spending by $54 billion. To offset that spending and to bring down the cost and size of government, President Trump is seeking impressive cuts in other areas.

The President would eliminate federal spending for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts. Both are worth doing. Already the left is trotting out Big Bird hoping we all forget Big Bird now belongs to HBO. We do not need the CPB or NPR to be government funded.

The State Department, EPA, HUD, and other executive departments would also see major cuts. While I disagree with the dramatic cuts to foreign aid, which amounts already to less than 1% of the federal budget, the President is keeping his promises in the budget.

Over the last eight years under President Obama, the national debt has exploded. President Obama added more to the national debt than any other President and almost as much as all other Presidents combined. During that time, Democrats claimed the debt and deficit no longer mattered. They will now, no doubt, claim it does matter.

In fact, the national debt has always mattered and President Trump has surrounded himself with a team that understands that and is committed to fiscal discipline. The budget goes a long way toward reducing the size and scope of the federal government and curbing the excesses of an increasingly out of control government bureaucracy. It is a very conservative budget.

Overall, the budget looks good. I'm not sold on stimulus, but otherwise, it's got a lot of good things in it.

I look forward to even more next year.

Here in my neck of flyover country, the deplorables have been complaining about the decay of interstate roads and necessary rail lines for many years.

I figure that if this stimulus focuses on that instead of payoffs to cronies, it will be tolerable.

The only thing is, LIHEAP shouldn’t be gutted. It’s a program that actually works. The funds are given to the energy companies, so that no abuse can occur, and it saves lives every winter. There is absolutely nothing wrong with LIHEAP.

There are plenty of other wasteful programs that can be cut without harming people. There are so many stupid grants for ridiculous things like researching the mating habits of animals, which should be cut instead.

Trump needs to leave LIHEAP alone, or he’s going to lose a lot of his rural and elderly support when the snow flies.

America’s politicians have been so accustomed to all the non-essential and worthless government programs and expenditures, it is impossible for them to see the difference between someone who has operated a successful business and their own kind, a bag full of ill equipped politicians having zero experience in operating even a Kool-Aid stand.

I love how the Faux Conservatives in the Never Trump movement all have their scared cows. We shouldn’t cut foreign aid? Well I suppose I understand why Erickson thinks this. MOST of that money gets funneled to big corporations for “studies” and “projects” here in the USA. His paymaster don’t want their rice bowl touched.

IT ALL HAS TO BE ON TABLE “Movement Conservatives” The minute you find one sacred cow in budget, then everyone else’s cow becomes “sacred” too.

This is where the Movmeent Conservatives always fail. They think they can just cut “bad” spending and protect “good” spending. NO YOU CANNOT.

Here is how DC Works.

Republicans: “We are going to cut a-b-c to increase spending on D”.

Democrats:”Why do you hate grandma and kids, we not going to let you spend more on D if you cut A-B-C.”

Republicans: “Ok don’t be mad at us and write nasty things about us in the Washington Post and the NY Times! We will spend more on everything”.

EVERYTHING must be on the table for cutting. If you do not do that, nothing gets cut.

Trump should do the right thing and shut down the government until they pass a budget. Do not sign another appropriations bill. Either pass the budget or watch sob stories for months. Trump voters will stick with him through this. Congress will feel the heat much more. Force them to pass a budget!!

Unless tehy pass an acceptable budget, just veto and keep veting.

There may be room for amendments, changes, but in a certain direction — and if the changes are acceptable, incorporate them.
