If you’re a New England Patriot and you don’t want to go to the White House because you hate Trump, you’re very big news.

I wouldn’t want to end up in Belichick’s crosshairs. He’s turned lesser teams into champions and doesn’t have any room for prima donnas, besides TB, that is. I understand Howie Long’s kid barely made it on the team this year, to hear his dad talk.
I wonder if the WH will set empty seats at the banquet table.
Sad that the team Belichick held together would let politics split them up. There’s some die-hard insurgents in every organization but the damage is irreparable.
I have no insight into whether or not the Cubs players were or were not fans of President Obama, but I would speculate that a majority probably would have wanted to bail on their required appearance in the last days of the Obama presidency... but that wouldn’t have been politically correct, would it?
Trump should write each one who shows up a personal check for 100,000 dollars. I’d love to see the looks on the faces of the ones who stayed away.
I have no clue as to how the players felt, but if they didn't want to be there then why did they show up? It was off season. The team can't retaliate against them otherwise the players union would be up in arms. Athletes go to these things because they want to do, or the don't go because the don't want to go. Nobody holds a gun to their head either way.

Standard MLB player contracts do indeed specify that players participate in team promotional activities.
I believe MLB is stricter about required appearances than other pro sports.
Not surprisingly, the bigger the star the more likely he can get away with snubbing team activities.

And Marshawn Lynch, (an African American) a Seattle Seahawk, didn’t go to the WH when they won the SB a few years ago. He wouldn’t comment but when the press asked his mom, she said something like, he didn’t want to.
Two of the Cubs didn't attend the White House visit. John Lester was attending the funeral for a family member, but Jake Arrieta just didn't want to. He gave as his excuse his son was having a tooth pulled.
