Fear is often said to be the greatest weapon against your enemies, but I think that fear might have to take 2nd place against the incredible arsenal of the AC-130. The AC-130, often called “The Angel of Death” is one of the most fearsome gunships that ever took to the sky. Operated by a crew of 13, a 132-foot wingspan and equipped with multiple machine high powered guns and flying at speeds of up to 300 MPH the AC-130 a weapon of war that can win wars by itself.

Thought you'd like a break from the News and watch some real Fire Power. Watch the Video and you'll see the inside of the plane were crew actually load some of the ammunition into the cannons. Awesome.

They pack a tremendous punch but also have a glass jaw.

This one from Hurlburt was flying around my house.

I read somewhere that the sight of this particular gunship, approaching and firing, is the most terrifying sight on earth. I never forgot that, and it still seems like a true statement.

The guns actually push the plane sideways and “uphill” when firing. Once heard that if they strafe a football field size area with a rabbit anywhere on it, the rabbit is pink spray....

My gun crew’s personal record with the 105mm was five shots in the air at one time. Time of flight was a little over 9 seconds. They got the last one off just as the first one impacted.

And, it only cost me a case of beer per gunner (all four of them)!

A flying artillery battery. In conjunction with A-10 Warthogs, a most fearsome weapon to bring to bear on advancing troop columns and convoys.

I think the guys on the ground aren't the only guys worrying. In some situations the gunship has a tremendous advantage. When there are a lot of pickup trucks with mounted AA guns on them, being in a low flying, relatively slow airplane within range of the AA guns would also be an adrenaline raising experience.

Everybody in that plane knows what could happen if they get hit with a couple of 20mm or 30mm HE rounds.

That’s great seeing the crews feed the guns and cannon. It always strikes me as odd that there is a man in the loop to feed these things. All the automation for fire control and aiming, but the feed is a manual process. I’ve read how unreliable auto-feeders are in tanks...must be the same in aircraft as well.

A dozen of these patrolling the southern border would instantly end all illegal border crossings.

PUFF or known as callsign 'Spooky Dragonship' firing on VC rocket site outside Redcatcher Brigade base the first night of TET 68. The AC130's little brother was the venerable old Gooney Bird C47, loved by us on the ground needing it. puff1 puff2
