Finding a three-legged mule deer is rare. It's even more uncommon to see an antlered doe. With all the predators in the West, it's extremely uncommon to see a mule deer with a significant handicap. Not only does it make them an easier meal for coyotes, bears, wolves, and cougar, but it makes them more susceptible to malnourishment and weather.
Taking that into consideration, you would probably feel pretty lucky to come across such a sight. But, what if you that three-legged mule deer was an antlered doe? You imagine no one would believe you unless you have a video of it.
Tammy Russell captures this on video.
And I shall call her: Caitlin.
This article is overly judgmental. It can be whatever it wants. I certain it will be accepted in SF.
At family Thanksgiving this year, a cousin showed me his video of a 3-legged antlered whitetail walking past his tree stand along the KS-OK border. He told me he had observed the deer running with others and it was able to keep up. Given the angle of the video, I can’t say for certain it was a buck but that seems most likely. My cousin was uncertain how the deer came to lose its lower hind leg but a good guess says it was shot off.
From the pic that deer certainly isn’t malnourished.
It’s fatter than most mule deer around here.
