Will Rauner join Emanuel in defying Trump's plan to end sanctuary cities?

CHICAGO - Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is being challenged by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the city council to stand up to President-elect Donald Trump's plan to enforce federal law concerning so-called "sanctuary cities."

A committee in the Chicago City Council advanced a resolution Monday calling on Rauner to issue a statement of "support for cities that welcome our undocumented family members and neighbors and condemn any effort to strip the city of Chicago of federal funding."

Rauner's office contends that the governor supports immigration policy reform, but has yet to publicly acknowledge Donald Trump's election to the presidency.

Trump lists on his website a plan for his first 100 days in office, which include the following subsection in which he claims to "cancel all federal funding to Sanctuary Cities" on the very first day.

A Trump transition team press release says:

Additionally, on the first day, I will take the following five actions to restore security and the constitutional rule of law:

FIRST, cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama

SECOND, begin the process of selecting a replacement for Justice Scalia from one of the 20 judges on my list, who will uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States

THIRD, cancel all federal funding to Sanctuary Cities

FOURTH, begin removing the more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants from the country and cancel visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back

FIFTH, suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur. All vetting of people coming into our country will be considered extreme vetting.

A loss of federal funding to Chicago would be at least $1.3 billion, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Rauner is a Republican weasel and the only type of Republican that can be elected in Illinois state-wide office.

A move by the state to support sanctuary cities would play into Trump’s favor, since a lot more federal dollars flow through the states than cities.
That is why California (a sanctuary state) has a lot more to worry about than just the sheer number of illegals they are sheltering.

“Will Rauner join Emanuel in defying Trump’s plan to end sanctuary cities?”

FAKE news can be subtle, when it comes to the truth.

Will Rauner join Emanuel in trying to defy Trump’s commitment to end sanctuary cities?

How would Rahm Emanuel go when it’s finally time for him to leave the mayor’s office in Chicago; quiet and peaceful-like, kicking and screaming or as a barricaded gunman?

Illinois can ill-afford to forego federal money.

President Elect Trump has hit the ground running. He is making it clear what he is going to do. He is not bluffing.

Sanctuary cities are going to go away or it will be financially painful for a few states.

Once again the Democrats are going to get bitten in the butt by rules they set up to punish the various states into accepting the liberal view of things.

I think he will only need to make one example before the rest fall into line.

Chicago is going down the drain fast as it is. When the Trump administration cuts Federal funding to support its infrastructure and social programs, Chicago will be somewhere on par with Harare or Kinshasa. Chicago’s residents can then thank Emmanuel and other coddlers of illegal immigrants for their predicament.

Unless Rauner wants to put the State of Illinois on suicide watch, he will never go along with Rahm Emmanuel’s Chicago will remain a sanctuary city ultimatum to Trump. Rauner is not nutz, and he still is a Pub, if only nominally one.

There are plenty of Republicans who are probably fully supportive of sanctuary cities/states (I’m surprised that Jeb Bush didn’t turn Florida into a sanctuary state while Governor), but they’re still rational enough to want to keep their jobs. Once Federal funding is cut for one sanctuary city, the rest will fall into line out of desperation.

I live in Wheeling and work in Chicago. I think that Rauner will agree with Emanuel. In 2014, Rauner said that he agreed with the law that allows illegal aliens get driver’s licenses.

Interesting. He might, but then he’s got to know it will be the kiss of death for him as far as any rapprochement with the Trump Admin for the next 4-8 years.
