I should think that after Caroline Kennedy, the Japanese would be open to considering any improvement.

So he's smart enough to hire somebody to choose the best of the best of the best photo available of himself.
He's not smart enough to keep his trap shut and be thought a lying idiot, rather than open it and leave no doubt.

My understanding is that in Japan it’s pretty much impossible for a smoking hot blonde to give offense no matter what she does.

If the Japanese were offended, they would never tell you, and they certainly would never tell an opposition journalist. Nemawashi (round-about consensus building) and haragei (vaguely hinting at but never saying what you really feel) together would require much much more subtle, passive-aggressive means of transmitting the offended feelings.

If the Japanese were offended they would never tell you, that would be incredibly bad manners

Well, my oh my. He's a Senior Writer at Weaknews magazine.
They just jumped the gun and delivered 125,000 issues with the cover showing Hillary as "Madam President". Major oops!
This is all I need to know about the credibility of this guy and his failing magazine.

OK, now that right there was funny.

I was talking to a woman at work the other day and discovered she lived for a couple of years in Japan. I asked how she liked it and she said she did except for two things: she is tall and blonde so she really stood out and wherever she went everything would just stop. People would stare, come over and ask if they could touch her hair, stuff like that. They were fascinated by it. So I'm guessing seeing Ivanka there, if anything, pleased them.
It reminded me of a story my dad told me. He served in the occupying forces in Japan in the early 50s and he said that the GIs with red hair had it made, every Japanese woman was fascinated and obsessed with them. He had black hair so I guess it worked out well for me, since he didn't bring home a Japanese bride before he got a chance to meet my mom!

The meeting was not an “official visit” and thus protocol of official visits were not in function. This visit was mostly a hello and get to know you visit. The presence of Donald Trump’s wife and family were 100% acceptable. He will not be the President until January. Once he is president official protocol then comes into effect. If this were official business it would not have been appropriate. This was not official business, he is not president yet.
ps
If I were the Japanese Prime Minister I sure as hell would want Trump’s lovely and erudite wife there on an unofficial visit. She is elegant and refined. I look forward to a new White House defined by beauty and grace and style. Trump is not this, but his wife sure as hell is.

My wife spent a few years in Japan when her dad was stationed there and she said the same thing. People would just come up and touch her hair—she said it creeper her out sometimes, though most people were extremely polite. She loved her time there.
