Roofing company offers free firearm for new employees (VIDEO)

While companies offering their customers free guns as an incentive for whatever they’re selling isn’t all that uncommon anymore, one Colorado roofing company has taken that mentality one step farther and is offering a free AR-15 for new employees.

James Webb, owner of Weatherproof Roofing, offered a “Get a Roof, Get a Gun” promotion back during the summer and it was a huge success. Business has boomed and Webb now needs several positions filled as soon as possible.

“We just don’t have the staff to keep up with it,” Webb said. “So now we’re giving it another shot with ‘Get a Job, Get a Gun.’”

And while some believe the idea is awesome, others aren’t so convinced.

“[If] they’ll give out an AR-15, I’ll work for anybody,” said Tyler Carter of Colorado Springs.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, however, is far from impressed.

“The only thing roofers should be armed with is a nail gun,” said Andrew Patrick, spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. “The addition of guns to an already hazardous work environment only increases the likelihood of an accident or altercation. The gun lobby’s ‘guns everywhere’ mentality has reached a new low when employers feel the need to offer firearms as part of their benefits package.”

But Webb simply shrugged off the naysayers.

Capitalism + 2nd Amendment = A Job.

A Win-Win!

But of course the whiners speak up:

The “Coalition to STOP Gun Violence” is firmly against further gun violence. BIG DEAL!!!
Equally against Gun Violence is 99% of America’s LEGAL gun owners, and we always have been.
I would like to see a NEW statistic as part of each and every story regarding Gun Violence. I’d like to see, beside description, a notation as to the LEGALITY of the gun that committed the violence. Maybe 2%?

Would it be legal to implement a company policy saying...

If you can’t qualify for a CCW permit, you can’t work here?

Depending on the state, normal background checks of perspective employees would satisfy that requirement.

“The only thing roofers should be armed with is a nail gun,”

I don't know about that, I know a couple of guys who used to work as roofers and had serious injuries as a result of putting a nail thru their hand. Oddly enough, they never once had a problem with their firearms.......

My impression is that roofer is a job you can get fresh out of prison. Perhaps this is the owner’s way of doing a background check.

Bloody brilliant; no messy background checks - they don’t get the gun, they don’t get the job. Means that you don’t have to worry about checking citizenship, checking backgrounds, it is all handled by the transfer, all you have to do is check to ensure that they actually have a clue about roofing (or you’re willing to train.)

“The only thing roofers should be armed with is a nail gun,”

Many moons ago, I was almost shot by a fellow worker who was using a nail gun nearby.

A small chip of wood had lodged in the safety switch on the front of the nail gun, which locked it in the firing position. The guy had his finger on the trigger as he turned towards me, and accidentally let off a round that missed my head by a couple of inches.

A favorite “Joke” by carpenters was to shoot their nail guns at the porta-potty when someone was in it.

It takes a special kind of stupid to assume that these new employees will be bringing their guns to the workplace.

Yes, unless you're Eric Holder.

Ah, but they are trying to remove that as being discriminatory against felons. The CCW angle is a good idea!

My only reservation is that not everybody *likes* AR-15s. So they should include a provision for other types of guns in the same price range.

Nationwide, the average price range of an average AR-15 is from $800-$1,050. A cheap one might go as low as $600, but the sky is the limit for higher end models.

In any event, this would take in a huge assortment of other guns, appealing to about any taste.

Apparently you left out same salient parts of the article:

Those who qualify must pass background checks, Webb said. New sales associates must get 10 roofing jobs on the books before they are eligible to get a weapon.

I could find no reference in the original article to your last posted sentence, "But Webb simply shrugged off the naysayers."

My comments in post #19 apply to the KDVR article, not the article from guns.com.
