Heather Mac Donald on the Ferguson Effect

Heather Mac Donald appeared on Fox News Monday morning to discuss the controversial Ferguson Effect.

After showing a graphic indicating that homicide was up 9% in America’s 63 largest cities, the host asked Mac Donald to explain the Ferguson Effect. Mac Donald replied, “The Ferguson Effect refers to…officers backing off of proactive policing in inner city neighborhoods and, as a result, criminals becoming emboldened.” She continued, “No only are we seeing a crime increase this year, last year there was a 17% homicide increase in the 56 largest cities. And in cities with large black populations 50% more increase in homicides. Black lives are being taken at an enormous rate to not a word of protest from the Black Lives Matter protesters.”

Mac Donald continued her attack on the BLM movement saying, “We need officers to act courteously, responsibly, within the confines of the law but the Black Lives Matter movement is a fraud. It is based on a lie, that the biggest threat facing young, black men today is the police. That’s simply not true.”

Asked by the Fox News host to expound on “the lie” Mac Donald appeared to jumble her words a bit. Having just said the lie was the claim, made by BLM, that police officers were the biggest threat to young, black men, Mac Donald said, “The lie is that the biggest threat facing young, black men is black on black crime. Blacks die at a homicide rate six times that of whites and Hispanics combined, that’s because they commit homicide at eight times higher than whites and Hispanics combined.

“And if you look at just whites alone, it’s an eleven times disparity. And that is what brings officers into inner city neighborhoods, trying to protect the many law-abiding residents there who demand more policing. The want cops to get out of their car at 1 a.m. and make that stop. But when President Obama, the Attorney General, the entire media besides Fox is saying that’s a racist activity, cops are backing off and as a result, again, crime is going up.”

The Ferguson Effect continues to be controversial. President Obama and former Attorney General Eric Holder have disputed its existence despite FBI Director Comey saying it might explain the recent rise of crime in some cities.

The Ferguson Effect gained some credibility recently when a crime researcher who had previously suggested it did not exist reversed himself. University of Missouri-St. Louis criminologist Richard Rosenfeld announced last month, “The only explanation that gets the timing right is a version of the Ferguson effect.”

That flies in the face of Clinton ranting about 'white violence' because of guns.

So far, no one has taken her to task, so she continues to pander and the sycophant media play right along.

If they don’t like Ferguson Effect we could rename it Obama/Holder/Mosby Effect.

I would not hold my breath for McConnell, Ryan, or any member of the GOP Congressional leadership to seriously take Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama to task for anything. Once in a while they might throw a milkbone to the GOP voter base by making a moderately harsh statement or passing a meaningless resolution. However, when it comes to any sustained opposition, or votes that really count, I have come to expect no action.

Same folks that are so strong for abortion rights - which also disproportionately affects the black community...

"If we can't get them with abortion, we can help them kill each other. Either way, they are dead and we are rid of these human weeds." (/liberal)

At this point in time in our history, I really don’t care what happens in black neighborhoods anymore or to the black people that populate them and I’m sure I’m not alone in that sentiment. It’s glaringly obvious that black people don’t care, either. This country would be a very nice place, in fact, better than any other place on earth, if we could rid ourselves of the social burdens and economic costs of the black community. Many decades of outreach assistance and trillions of dollars have been spent on “black uplift”, yet it doesn’t seem to have done a bit of good. Black social pathologies appear to be intractable and it’s most certainly not the fault of “da white man”. Black people live in the world they’ve created for themselves. I’ve heard it said, “Give white people a pile of bricks and they’ll build a city. Give black people a city and they’ll turn it into a pile of bricks.”

Pretty broad brush there. Two thirds of Black Americans are doing acceptably well. The underclass gives a false impression of the Black population as a whole.

And there is gathering evidence that past environmental stresses can affect the activation of genetic material in subsequent generations. Until maybe ten years ago science did not recognize this; but the discovery that genes can be turned on or off and passed on in a such states, gives reason for caution in poo-pooing the idea that what our ancestors experienced has no bearing on how we react to our environment.

McConnell is marginally better than Ryan, at least he has held up the Merrick Garland nomination while I can’t think of a thing Ryan has done critical of Obama other than the easy task of insisting on the release of the full Omar transcript.

This is pure, unadulterated bullshiite.

What white cop in his right mind would not back off and let them kill and eat each other rather than jeopardizing his career? Patrol neighborhoods that appreciate your presence and let the rest go to hell.

I am of the opinion that black people, as a race, are incapable of effective self government. As evidence I would submit any nation in Africa and any large American city that has a large African American population and a predominately Black city government. Detroit comes to mind but there are many others.

Slavery is the poison that continues to infect our society over 150 years after its violent end.

Slavery, as an institution, was based on racial discrimination as was the segregation of blacks from access to the American dream, and mainstream society, for 100 years after the official end of slavery. While laws supporting racial discrimination have been eliminated, the cultural and societal legacy of slavery and segregation continue to drive American politics and contribute to racial animosity. Whether one wishes to care about black people, until we as a society find a way to achieve Martin Luther King’s dream of judging people by their character and not the color of their skin, the politics and culture of the United States will continue to be harmed by the legacy of the enslavement of the black race. From my perspective, this is an issue that cannot be ignored if our country, and its citizens, are to achieve their full potential.

Unfortunately, too many politicians, academics, journalists, social activists, and government bureaucrats benefit from fomenting racial strife and dependency. Blacks suffer greatly from the failure of strong positive leadership and role models in communities trapped in an endless cycle of poverty, illiteracy, immorality, and complete dependence on handouts. As you have pointed out trillions have been spent by mostly white taxpayers trying to break the cycle without much to show for the effort. Most blacks who have broken the cycle have achieved as the result of individual determination to escape the poverty vortex and the will to change behavior in order to find a better life. Unfortunately few who escape devote their time and effort after leaving the ghetto to elevating the members of their own race they left behind. As one successful black business executive told me, “My responsibility is to my family and my children, not the children of others. I have to be an example for my children so they don’t fall back into the trap.”

It is ironic many more whites volunteer to work directly with poor black children as “big brothers and big sisters” than do members of the black middle class. Rightly or wrongly the private sector black middle class is focused on self and not “community”. Only the members of the black middle class in government jobs seem to have the time and desire to advocate for the poor they left behind. That advocacy involves demanding more tax money for failed programs, not personal involvement in actually going into the ghetto and working with people. Even the great community organizer Barack Obama wouldn’t live or work in the “hood”.

I have become convinced any escape from the poverty vortex must result from the desire and determination of blacks trapped in poverty and their community leaders. Unfortunately, almost all black political leaders derive their power from impoverished blacks voting as a block. Breaking the cycle of poverty means breaking the chains of dependence. Independent people over time tend to vote independently. The Democrat Party, and black politicians, cannot maintain power if the majority of blacks are not economically dependent on the government. Hence, the failure of black politicians, community leaders, and liberal white democrats to support policies encouraging blacks to value education, intact families, acquisition of skills, personal responsibility, thrift, and hard work.

If black leaders won’t lead their people to the promised land, and if the blacks who escape the poverty cycle won’t reach back and show the way, I see little hope the cycle will be broken. While there are exceptions, the truth is the odds are heavily stacked against the crack baby born given birth today by a 13 year old fourth generation welfare child whose single mother had no parenting skills and who will not be nurtured in an home where values are taught. This child will learn dependency at an early age. The authority role model figures in the child’s life will be street thugs. The community will teach the child to shirk personal responsibility, education, and hard work. The message will be you can’t do any better on your own because society and white people are keeping you down.

I care because I want our nation to finally escape the poisonous legacy of slavery. Unfortunately I cannot currently see a way out. Cultural change takes eons when not imposed by force.

You got it. I agree. Which is why I don’t give a rip anymore about blacks and their problems. Why should non-black taxpayers generations removed from slavery continue to bear an unjust burden into perpetuity for a problem they didn’t create and can’t resolve. As I said, blacks, themselves, don’t care. Why should anyone else?

American black people are a race, but they are not all the same. Don’t compare them to Africans...they are Americans. Some of them are a racist mess; but not all of them.

The same with the American white race.
