Scrap steel is worth about .03 a pound. Each weighs about 2.5 lbs empty. 100,000 1911’s would be worth about $7500.

Each is worth about 8 cents in scrap.

I have no idea at all whether these are worn out guns or are serviceable.

Although it would never in a million years figure this out, the gov’t could “consign” 950 guns @ $250 ea to any of a thousand dealers, giving them 50 guns for their effort. I suspect the guns are worth $500 each as is how is but more than a few might be worth $1500. Well north of $1K, anyway.

Each dealer sends the government 950 * $250 = $237,500. within 180 days.

Each dealer sells the guns and pays taxes on the profits which would probably average $250 per gun after some refurb. That’s an add’l 950 * 60 figured at 25% or $14,250. So each batch of guns is worth about $250K.

There’s $25 MM worth of guns there. Although it would be necessary to subtract the $672,000 for the study of how best to market them from the total receipts.

Why don’t you give a pistol to any person of the gay community who wants one, so that they might have a chance of protecting themselves against your muslim terrorist buddies, Johnny?

I agree. When stability is reached they’re the most stable group to take central control. Though Turkey would have a conniption.

These guns are pretty much already destroyed. CMP is supposed to start selling them for about $1000. They are old guns mostly worn out and may have been rebuilt 7 times.

It is nice that people are willing to pay $1,000 for old, wornout guns.

I suppose it is the historical and sentimental value.

No reason to destroy them to get 8 cents worth of scrap when the taxpayers can get $1,000 value out of them, and make collectors happy.

Mac is NUTS!

Now, I wouldn’t want one just because I don’t want to be in their database.

oh...and my Series 70 Gold Cup is just fine.....

Back in the wayback I looked up the FSN for the pistols. The purchase price was $57 and they had not bought any since WW2.

The ones I shot worked fine. They grouped alright but the problem with them was the crap sights. Low and left. They also could have used the ejection port opened up but the Army doesn’t care about reloading the brass.

I would bet the stored guns nearly all operate OK. Since they went into storage after all awaiting reissue if needed.

The Manchurian Senator proves what a scum he is once again. Sure would like to see those interrogation recordings the GRU has of Slick Mick.

I’ve seen the Army’s destruction process. After being dropped through “Captain Crunch” (the shredder), the scrap is inspected and anything—ANYTHING, even a front sight post—that might be salvageable is torched so that nothing can be salvaged. They have people sorting the scrap on conveyor belts and others with acetylene torches working at this level of destruction.

There’s no way Uncle Sam can avoid incurring a loss on destruction compared to just selling them to the surplus market.

I would bet money there are thousands of brand-new 1911A-1s in government warehouses, even though the services were issued worn-out junkers.

I think this entire debate really ought to center on the service condition of the guns in question. If they are in reasonable and decent condition...then some sale should be in order. If these are in marginal condition and correctly ID’ed as ‘junk’, then selling them isn’t a good idea. So far, no one from DoD has said anything about an inspection and labeling them correctly....let’s get to this point first.

**** “Wore out pieces of junk mostly” ****

Yep, but when I stuck that loaded, cocked, safety off piece of junk in his ear and yelled “Security Alert” he still pissed his pants. Still very functional.

I do not think the condition of the guns is material at all.

There are hundreds of thousands of willing buyer who would love to have one, beat up or not. They are as much cultural icons as they are functional weapons.

If they are sold for $200 apiece for wall hangers, the people still get their icons and the government still gets a lot more money.

Okay fine. I got mine.

Me too - a 1911 made in the Springfield plant in 1914 - still a sweet shooter and a classic/collectible to boot...

The government should not be the supplier of weapons for anyone but the army. You want a 1911? Buy one new or used. There are a few million of them.

The object is to return to the government the greatest value for the asset so as to minimize the financial burdens on the taxpayer of funding the government.

the cost of the sale is minimized by selling the firearms at auction. The return of selling the arms at auction is far greater than the return by recycling,

My guess is that it is far greater knowing that the government would have to go through a bid process to select a recycler and another to select a contractor to engineer and produce the products manufactured from the steel.

My guess is that this entire bill is a crony capitalist deal to funnel government dollars to a McCain contributor

Only a small number of the firearms are designated to the CMP and the cost are minimal.
