Small world. We headed into Copenhagen. We were home ported out of Newport, RI.

2. Lock a missile radar onto the plane

I think they do this deliberately, so that we will power up our missile radars, and they can record information about them for future counter-measures.

Yes, that’s exactly what (and why) they do it. I worked in ECM in the Navy, and it was “do not power up fire control, or anything else” - but we did collect a BUNCH of stuff when they flew over (or even near, really)...

Small world indeed. We also went to Copenhagen, and were were home ported in Newport. That was a great cruise.

Well, we were in all those places except England and Hamburg. Remember the Sea Hotel in Gulf Juan? It was a bordello right on the waterfront and the shore patrol station was in the back.

Remember "Pig Alley" in Naples, and "The Gut" in Valletta? Oh well, there are some things we probably shouldn't talk about here, since there are ladies present.

And yeah, we're not getting older, just saltier!

I think Trump and Putin will get along fine. The US has no reason to be enemies with Russia but we do need to command respect.

LOL! OMG! Do I remember. We were warned not to go there so the first thing just about everybody did was head there. I think a couple of our 1st class POs got SP duty. As for the other, yeah I remember them as well (the Bluebird[?] in Naples). Saw an officer get taken for some money buying a Berretta at the water front in Naples. When he got back on the ship there was a rock inside the box. Don’t know how they did it but they were slick. We were smarter and went to the UN HQ outside of Naples and bought ours there. Yeah, better knock it off as Chief Lamp used to say. LOL! Thanks for the memories.

P.S. Imagine 300+million people in this country, how many served on that deployment and how many are on FReerepublic. Too funny.

That’s correct. In those day, as long as there was no indication of a fire control system lock. We tracked them, but we never locked fire control on them. It was sorta the un-written rule in those day. No fire control lock, no foul. Otherwise birds free, something the Soviet pilots understood.

Sometimes they are the only US ship in the region. Token US force; not a serious threat.

Done before. In the 70s, pilots of the Royal Omani Air Force, buzzed the Constellation in the Indian Ocean. They came in so low that they had to pull up to avoid hitting the ship’s hull. Air Boss got into a lot of trouble that day.

OK, get ready for this. Our Senior Chief warned us to be careful of buying Berrettas, because of what you just described, getting a box with a rock in it. No lie, I remembered that when I read your last post.

Crap, I wonder how many times we ran in to each other on liberty...

LOL! We may have. When we were anchored off Gulf Juan, me being a lowly E-2, I got assigned a work detail to go in to Cannes and off load milk from refrigerated semis for the squadron on to a barge to be dispersed to all the ships. We spent all day at the beach in our dungarees and offloaded about 5000 5 gallon boxes of milk(it was either 3000 or 5000. Long time ago). We had to sit and wait for the barge to return after the first load and then load the rest. I think the Lester got like 10 boxes. Of course the carrier got the bulk of it. As for the Berettas, like I said, three of us went to the NATO exchange and got ours. They were actually in the boxes when we got back on board but were quickly whisked away to the armory.

The Russians continue to BUZZ the West Coast .. because they can.

What was the destroyer doing so close to the West Coast anyway?

The flyby of the destroyer was not near CA. I was talking about other aircraft .. large bombers the Russians fly near Alaska and the Northwest.
