On this date (January 27) in 1945, the Soviet Army liberated Auschwitz.
Auschwitz, also known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, opened in 1940 and was the largest of the Nazi concentration and death camps. Located in southern Poland, Auschwitz initially served as a detention center for political prisoners. However, it evolved into a network of camps where Jewish people and other perceived enemies of the Nazi state were exterminated, often in gas chambers, or used as slave labor. Some prisoners were also subjected to barbaric medical experiments led by Josef Mengele (1911-79).
During World War II (1939-45), more than 1 million people, by some accounts, lost their lives at Auschwitz. In January 1945, with the Soviet army approaching, Nazi officials ordered the camp abandoned and sent an estimated 60,000 prisoners on a forced march to other locations. When the Soviets entered Auschwitz, they found thousands of emaciated detainees and piles of corpses left behind.

The BBC has a great documentary on Auschwitz. Chilling.
Released last year, this is -- by far -- the best book I've read on the subject.
I was unaware of that one, thank you for posting.
This is impossible. Obama’s uncle liberated Auschwitz. Please update the Obamanation approved history text.
Obamas grandfather was there. Apparently in a little known American unit of the Russian Army.

You’re very welcome. It’s well researched, deeply sourced and supremely well written.
I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I went into it with the question of who knew what, when. The brief answer is that everybody knew something but it was never the same something, and when makes a very big difference.
It appears as if the full BBC documentary is available on youtube. I’ve saved it to watch when I have more time:
Thanks!
I know of at least two America citizens that served in the Soviet Army during WWII. Neither had Obama as a last name.
You are very welcome.
Thanks for the posting. I remember growing up we always played WW2.
I guess when you have Uncles who’ve served you don’t need to learn in school.
I think that the claim was made for an uncle on 0bama’s mother’s side of the family. Even so, I think that 0bama got the name of the camp incorrect.
Thanks
