Herd probably rejected him because he had an umbilicus infection and huge cyst that would normally have killed him without intervention, and possibly the herd, too, if it managed to spread to them. And infection often carries an odor. The topic of why they rejected him didn’t come up but the keeper did say — and I noted — that 99% die even with treatment. The herd probably operated on a self-preservation decision/instinct and rejected him for it to save all others. My layman’s guess anyway — I’m no elephant.

As the owner of a German Shepherd, they’re loyal, sweet and very protective dogs.
My favorite breed!

Many, many years ago when my children were still very small (And very, very active) I had a German Shepard that I raised from a pup.
Once the kids came along he became very protective of them.
He was not "my dog" anymore. He was their dog. Very Loyal. lol (to them).
It worked out well that way.

I have two GSD. One is mixed and the other is 100%. I love them but they sure keep me busy. I am not sure what they would think or do if they saw an elephant. I hope the baby elephant makes it.

Yes, it’s been a while, but thanks for the ping nonetheless!
Great story. Funny where the clip ends with the GSD digging to China. Gave me the idea of getting a couple of yards of dirt to save my lawn.
