The L likely was a symbol of a throne or chief's seat and indicated power and authority.

"[The Phoenician] Lamedh may have come from a pictogram of an ox goad or cattle prod. Some have suggested a shepherd's staff.

There can be only one God. There can be many ideas of His character and how to worship Him. Some of those ideas can be completely false.

If you believe Pope Francis, yes.

If you believe God, then no.

Who do you believe?

Atop the Dome of the Rock includes:

“Praise to Allah who begets no son and has no associate in power and who has no surrogate for humiliations.” The point is sustained by repetition, together with the contrary assertion that Mohammed alone can provide intercession on the day when the Muslim community is resurrected.”

About the similar names and translations ... where I work there are 4 or 5 guys named John: John the engineer; Pajama John the line worker; John the repair guy; John the welding inspector; and John the VP of sales who is a major pain in the @$$.

Is John the same as John? Or the other John? Or the other John?

Of course not.

The God of the Bible and the deity of Islam are too different in too many ways. Just look at the Jews as portrayed in the Bible vs. the Koran. It is extremely illogical to imagine they are the same deity, just because they share the same name in some translations.

Let’s broaden the question to examine it.

Which of these worship the same God?
Mormons
Jehovah Witnesses
Christian Scientists
United Church of Christ
United Methodist?
Pentecostals
Evangelicals
Russian Orthodox
Liberation Theology Catholics
Pope Paul II Catholics
Orthodox Jews like Dennis Prager, Michael Medved
Reform Jews
Shia Muslims
Sunni Muslims

Question 2. Who decides? Do we decide? Or does God decide? Is it our role to tell God what his limits are?

Prager is not an Orthodox Jew, nor does he claim to be.

I stand corrected.

But it just illustrates my question. How precisely do we define things and draw the lines?

The future must not belong to those who deny the true nature of Islam

John Quincy Adams on Islam

In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar, the Egyptian, combining the powers of transcendent genius, with the preternatural energy of a fanatic, and the fraudulent spirit of an impostor, proclaimed himself as a messenger from Heaven, and spread desolation and delusion over an extensive portion of the earth. Adopting from the sublime conception of the Mosaic law, the doctrine of one omnipotent God; he connected indissolubly with it, the audacious falsehood, that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust, by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE.

Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. That war is yet flagrant; nor can it cease but by the extinction of that imposture, which has been permitted by Providence to prolong the degeneracy of man. While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men. The hand of Ishmael will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. It is, indeed, amongst the mysterious dealings of God, that this delusion should have been suffered for so many ages, and during so many generations of human kind, to prevail over the doctrines of the meek and peaceful and benevolent Jesus (Blunt, 1830, 29:269, capitals in orig.).

Why is it important to ‘draw lines’?

America’s Founding Fathers considered and rejected religious tests. They weren’t prissy librarians, they were practical men who respected and encouraged their fellow man to live amicably with their neighbors despite differences. And they were insistence that those who wouldn’t live amicably should be removed from society by force of arms if necessary.

If we’re into the hypothetical, it’s hard to believe Christians and Jews worship the same God, though Jewish religious tradition holds that they do. Despite millions of dead Jews at Christian hands.

You reference America’s Founding Fathers but neglect the reality of the Founding Fathers.

The Founding Fathers said government should not apply religious test.

The Founding Fathers were very much in favor of individuals applying religious tests. Thus a person could choose which church to join, and to start a new church, or no church, if the existing churches were inadequate.

Religious competition is one of the great features of the US.

Islam worships Satan as their god desires them to rape little girls and kill those that don’t follow Satan.

http://www.increasinglearning.com/the-religious-test-clause.html

...Those who are Mahometans, or any others who are not professors of the Christian religion, can never be elected to the office of President, or other high office, but in one of two cases.

First, if the people of America lay aside the Christian religion altogether, it may happen. Should this unfortunately take place, the people will choose such men as think as they do themselves.

Another case is, if any persons of such descriptions should notwithstanding their religion, acquire the confidence and esteem of the people of America by their good conduct and practice of virtue, they may be chosen.

I leave to gentlemen’s candor to judge what probability there is of the people’s choosing men of different sentiments from themselves...

John Quincy Adams nails it all those years ago:
Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust, by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion.

He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy;

and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind.

THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE.

Nothing has changed from then until now other than today's disregard and disrespect for the wisdom of Fathers, and, in our case, in favor of the dreams of a lost boy's absent and malevolent father.

Extremely not good.

When disregarded and blatantly disrespected, and often when least expected, the wisdom of Fathers will either take us to the woodshed or take us out completely.

Jesus said, in John 4, that “God is a Spirit, and they who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

Wrong theology prevents true worship.

Not everything in Islam is wrong. “Allah” is the Arabic word for God. Arabic speaking Christians and Jews use the same title.

Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, recognizes one God, that He is almighty, the Creator and Judge of the world.

But a false theology of God is imprinted on Islam and the Koran. Islam denies that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for the sins of the world. Consequently they also deny His resurrection from the dead. Islam also characterizes God without the love, mercy, righteousness, impartiality, justice and much more that are revealed in the Bible.
