I would add - always file a travel plan with a responsible person. BTW that part of the country is notorious for erroneous GPS readings.

I was part of a search and rescue team, in younger days and often wondered about people who walked into the woods with no map, compass, knife, the ability to create shelter, etc.
I have been a solo hiker my entire life and love my alone time.
That said, these days, I have a PUB so if something does halpen, I can send a signal.
Love that it cookie crumbs my exploration via email as well, which might one day prove useful.

Read an article once about a group that takes people way out into the wilderness in foreign countries...
One of the younger people asked the guide why they used a rope to cross a little River where the depth was under two feet...
To paraphrase: we are hundreds of miles from civilization.
. You slip and break your ankle, you chance of getting out alive went to about 5 %

I use the “Solo” PLB and paid $150.
Love it.
Gives me more confidence and comfort.

Woukd suck to pack something out that weighs more than me. Yeah I thought that too. Was he going to go back for it? Butcher it and make a travois to haul the meat? Lots of work, anyway.

I hunt within a few hundred yards of a road (shooting in a different direction, of course) and half a mile from hunters’ camps. I carry a 9mm with lots of extra magazines. I can literally fire off an “S.O.S.” of 9mm shells. :-)
Plus I have a radio. Plus lights.
I’ll take my chances for the pleasure of being alone.

I’ve spent my life out there by myself.
I know the risks. I may die of it.
Totally worth it.

You have to turn them on. The up side to that is if you go on a two week adventure and bust your leg on the second day you don't have to wait 12 days for people to start looking for you.
I have an ACR ResQlink. Small and waterproof 406 beacon. Down around $250 now. Five years ago they were $600 and 4 times the size.

I would add - always file a travel plan with a responsible person. Or file the travel plan with the ex-wife and ask her to charge the batteries for your beacon. What could go wrong?
