Scott Walker: US combat forces not necessary in Iraq now

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is drawing a contrast with one of his 2016 competitors, arguing that U.S. combat troops are not needed now in Iraq.

On ABC News’s “This Week,” Walker was asked whether he would send U.S. combat troops to Iraq now if he were commander in chief.

“No, I believe right now we have a capacity to reclaim Iraq with the Iraqi forces that are there as long as we unleash the power that is already there of the American armed forces,” he said in an interview airing Sunday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who announced his presidential bid last week, has advocated sending 10,000 U.S. ground troops to Iraq now to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Instead, Walker said the U.S. should “reengage” the strength of the U.S. military forces that are currently in Iraq, thereby empowering allied forces that can reclaim territory. Walker said the strategy should not, however, lead to ISIS terrorists being pushed out toward Syria where they can find safe haven.

Asked if he favors Graham’s approach, Walker initially said, “I think we shouldn't rule anything out.”

Later, he added, “I would not rule out boots on the ground.”

Walker declined to say whether he would rule out a “full-blown U.S. reinvasion of Iraq and Syria.”

“I don't think we should ever send a message to our foes as to how far we're willing to go,” he replied.

The Wisconsin governor said he plans to announce his 2016 intentions shortly after the end of the month.

the media spun this, making it sound like he’s gung ho to go back in. I’m for Cruz, but Walker seems like a good guy and what the press did was terrible, as usual.

We have to stop the Baghdad government from transshipping the arms we send thru their so called military directly to ISIS. Just an observation, we weren’t so damn concerned about “collateral damage” 70 years ago when we took down Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini. The AF and the Navy are bringing back way too many loads of ammo un-dropped or un-expended. We blow up more stuff on the gunnery ranges than we do in Iraq.

There was an article from ABC news about this posted earlier by 2ndDivisionvet. In that article Walker was asked about the 250,000 jobs he promised to create and only delivered around 50% of that. He didn’t answer that question but diverted to something else.

I’m waiting for an informed reporter to ask him why under his Chairmanship, the WEDC agency he created spent 975 million tax dollars and lost 2 jobs for every one job created. The companies that donated to Walker’s campaign received 60% of that money and outsourced these jobs overseas. For that amount of money, Wisconsin lost over 7,000 jobs, leaving WEDC in the minus column for that -7000 jobs amount.

Well he won’t announce and the more he talks the more he reveals he’s not the guy. Keep it up Scotty. If you don’t announce by June 15th Trump is jumping in and you won’t be able to buy an interview. I don’t know who’s advising this guy but he needs to say “your fired” :-)
