Republican presidential candidates gathered last month at the Oklahoma City Cox Conference Center, just a few blocks from the site of what was the Alfred R. Murrah Federal Building. Two decades ago, anti-government militia sympathizer Timothy McVeigh blew it up in what he called an act of war against the U.S. government. It was the worst crime of domestically bred terrorism in American history. McVeigh was executed in 2001, but since then, some of his militia ideals have gone mainstream and even been introduced as laws in many states, including Oklahoma.
Legislators in dozens of states have submitted proposals to nullify or block federal lawsa longtime goal of militias. These have included exempting states from federal gun laws and educational standards, as well as, of course, Obamacare. That doesnt make these anti-federal statutes part of McVeighs madness, but Republican politicians now often echo conspiracy theories once relegated to troglodyte pamphlets. And several states have passed laws making gold a currencya step toward returning to the gold standardeven though currency is a federal responsibility.
When Cliven Bundy engaged in an armed standoff with Bureau of Land Management agents in 2014, after a federal court order demanded he get his cattle off federal land, as he hadnt paid grazing fees for 20 years, several of the current Republican presidential candidates sided with the outlaw. As armed militia members converged in Nevada to protect Bundy, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas called the events the unfortunate and tragic culmination of the path President Obama has set the federal government on.(continued)

McVeigh was a leftist.
Maybe we should just ban Wacos?
McVeigh had no connection of any kind to any militia yet the media just can’t quit linking them.
He went to exactly 1 Michigan militia meeting and they called the FBI.
Facts never get in the way of the Narrative.
“even though currency is a federal responsibility”
Nina sweety, go read what the Constitution actually says about currency you frigging dolt.
L
He was sending letters to Gore Vidal from prison. Like the lefties he considered the United States to be an imperialist bully.
Newsweak still exists?
Nina has been nipping the Miracle-Gro.
She sites the totally discredited SPLC.
How did this get published?
(Rhetorical question. I know Newsweek is usually pathetic).
Frankly, the article just shows how oppressive the fed gov has become in the last 20 years.
Ideas that were ‘paranoid’ then have become a reality that requires states to respond with laws to protect the rights of their citizens from an out of control government.
It’s a shame that the author is to agenda-blind to see the indictment of the left that she’s actually written
Remember, this woman said in the 90s that she would be glad to give His Slickness oral sex to thank him for keeping abortion legal.
So this is no surprise.
FUnewsweak
Good grief, where do we start with this idiocy? Maybe just this: Clive Bundy not wishing his land stolen by the BLM and Tim McVeigh blowing up a building are, believe it or not, not the same thing. McVeigh, a left-leaning agnostic, has been recast as a right-wing Christian fundamentalist to fit The Narrative and the little media parrots have been squawking it for decades. The degree to which the author considers any resistance, any disagreement, with the federal government and its policies to be equivalent to murderous terrorism is the degree to which the media Left have gone absolutely insane.
Newsweak DOESN’T publish these days, does it?
It’s simply another computer blog (one who’s name was purchased for the princely sum of one dollar).
“as he hadnt paid grazing fees for 20 years”
We have lots of worthless cancers in this country that have never paid ANYTHING for a lot more than 20 years, yet they get a Government check every month.
When can we attack them?
Author is a Clinton knee pad girl - once said women should
get on their knees and give Willard a Monica for supporting abortion .......
But we won't let that stop us from declaring that these anti-federal statutes are part of the right wing's madness.
