I think the prof has it almost exactly backwards.
The commies had a desperate need to force people to agree with them. They worried about how people thought. Bad thoughts were to be stamped out by any means necessary. That’s why the commies forced millions of the people they murdered to sign false confessions. Confessions they and the people they were about to murder both knew were untrue, and that nobody else would ever see.
OTOH, the Nazis pretty much left people alone. They were concerned with power, not what people thought about them, or about anything else.
There were of course two exceptions. If the Nazis thought you were or might become a threat to their power, you were more or less dead. And they didn’t bother with forcing you to sign phony confessions, they just killed you.
And if you were unlucky enough to be a member of a group the Nazis were down on for their insane racial reasons, you were equally toast. But nobody again bothered to force you into signing confessions. They just killed you.
