School districts, parents at odds over breakfast in class

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of breakfasts served in the nation's schools has doubled in the last two decades, a surge driven largely by a change in how districts deliver the food.

Instead of providing low-income students free or reduced-price meals in the cafeteria, they're increasingly serving all children in the classroom. Food policy advocates say the change increases equity, however, it's fueled a backlash from parents and teachers. They contend that it takes up class time that should be devoted to learning and wastes food by serving it to kids who don't want or need it....

Liberals want kids fed in school. Liberals also have started sending kids home with backpacks full of food for the weekend in some places. Its amazing how a concept such as school lunches morphs into something else. Now liberals arent just concerned with lunch but also breakfast , and also worried about what will kids eat when school is not in session. Geez.

Not just liberals. Last year we had city councilmen - pubbies - talking about financing roach coaches to go around to city parks delivering food to the kids. They were stupefied and indignant when I asked, “Isn’t that what parents are for?”

The parents' food stamps will be reduced by an amount if the government is feeding the kids at school, right? Please, stop laughing, I'm serious.

Some conservatives are Republican, but not all Republicans are conservatives. It’s a Venn sort of thing.

Why are parents just not expected to be responsible for their children anymore? It is very depressing to see the reaction of asking where are the parents, and the ides that parents ought to be providing for their kids.

It also encourages obesity — I thought the Libtards were dead set against obesity.

Why would any parent in any financial bracket have their kid eat a breakfast provided by a public school-especially when they see what slop is offered at lunch? I made my kid’s breakfast and packed her lunch and she was in private school-parents need to make their own kids’ meals-the ones thunder thighs is mandating don’t look healthy to me...

Our public schools don’t seem to participate in Michele’s food edicts. I think the Subway franchise counter gets a lot of business.

Behind every school breakfast/lunch program is a massive industry of food producers who lobby all levels of government to fund this crap.

Because when the Obama-famine comes, implementation will be more efficient.

I used to live across the street from a school in Los Angeles. They have been serving three meals a day, year round, for a long time.

I was always having to deal with mothers parking in front of my garage door while picking up their kids... none of them speak a word of English, so telling them off was useless. The few that did speak some English were always full of attitude... "we're allowed to park here" and stuff like that.

I'm glad I got out of there.

In my hometown of La Crosse, Wis the usual suspects want to feed kids through the summer. They actually had the gall to get on tv and whine about kids starving if the schools don’t feed them during summer vacation.

Neither do the schools out here-but I don’t know anyone who does not make their kids’ lunches for school at home-there are as many kids out here attending the small local Christian school-which does not provide lunch-one of the independent “cottage schools” or being individually homeschooled as there are in public school.

There are very few obese people of any age here-fresh food is available for sale or barter-we all grow/raise/make some of our own stuff, and the general store does not take food stamps, but this is BFE...

"what parents are for"

I get just as irritated. What kind of parent has kids not knowing if they can feed them? Parents who shouldn't have kids that what.
