To Paraphrase Oliver Hardy, Americans Need To Tell the Obama Administration “Well, Here’s Another Fine Mess You’ve Gotten Us Into”.
Last fall, Mr. Obama praised Yemen for being a supportive partner on the front line in the “War on Terror.” He went as far as calling the drone war against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) a success and a model for his Administration’s approach to counterterrorism against extremists. But the Iranian backed Houthi rebels didn’t appreciate their sovereignty being violated by American drones targeting AQAP killing Yemeni civilians. Another catalyst for the upraising is the little reported humanitarian crisis ravaging the nation. The people dearly needed help and the oil rich nations in the region, Yemen’s fellow well off Muslims, ignored the situation, along with the American media and their “Hero of the Golf Course.”
The Houthis are Shiites, supported by Iran, yet oppressed by Yemen’s Sunni majority. They are hostile to both al Qaeda and the United States. There is speculation as to whether the Houthis want to actually force the current prime minister out of Yemen or just use their military success to pressure the government for better treatment of the Shiites tribes. The country is the poorest in the region, making it a perfect base of operations for al Qaeda. The combination of extreme poverty, mistreatment by the Sunnis and seeing friends and family killed by American drones made them the perfect recruits for the Iranians quest to dominate the region. Yemen will need American or Iranian help in the future to rid the country of the al Qaeda menace.
Of note, the Houthi Rebels haven’t stopped Yemen’s intelligence services coordinating counterterrorism operations with the United States so that drones may be targeted against al Qaeda.
