Time: Women in Meetings Never Interrupt Men, "Interruption" Should be Changed to "Manterruption"
Pundit Press ^ | 1/15/15 | Aurelius

If you are a woman and are speaking when a man butts in, you have not been interrupted. Instead, according to Time, you have been “manterrupted” because men disproportionately interrupt females and women rarely interrupt males.

According to an article published this week, titled “How Not to Be ‘Manterrupted’ In Meetings” and written by Jessica Bennett, there is an epidemic of sexism in which men do not respect the opinions of women.

Bennett’s first example is the infamous VMA award ceremony in which Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift. Yet this was not an aberration, according to Bennett, who sees it as the norm. She defines “manterruption” as “Unnecessary interruption of a woman by a man.”

Oddly, Bennett did not say that “occasionally” men interrupt women, nor does she say that only some do. Instead, she writes that it is men that interrupt women, period, and that all women have faced this menace.

“We speak up in a meeting,” she writes of women, “only to hear a man’s voice chime in louder. We pitch an idea, perhaps too uncertainly – only to have a dude repeat it with authority. We may possess the skill, but he has the right vocal chords – which means we shut up, losing our confidence (or worse, the credit for the work).”

When a feminazi interrupts you she’s not being bossy, she’s being empowered against hundreds of years of masculine hegemony.

NOT TRUE in my house. I have the greatest wife on this planet. I love her dearly. But I keep track and report on her interruptions when we have "discussions" regarding topics we dissagree on. I've gotten up to 7 before I finished the same thought before.

Obviously this is not in a professional business setting but....

I'll go read the rest of the article now.

:: because men disproportionately interrupt females and women rarely interrupt males. ::

While Dhimmicrat-politicians consistently “filibuster” (AKA: talk over) normal political discussion.
Because their cause is sooooooo much more important than the facts being portrayed.

They don’t interrupt because they don’t want to look stupid.

This woman clearly does not share my 35+ years’ career experience.

Women/men are equal opportunity interruptors, if there is such a word.

It comes down to personality, not gender.

It also comes down to the relevance and DURATION of your comments.

Also some folks have speech patterns where they don’t breathe at the natural periods and commas in their remarks, and thus are harder for polite people to interrupt.

Lastly - I gotta ask. Who is running the meetings she is in/observing? A good leader/manager handles the ‘conversations’ and contributions.

This is such baloney! I am woman architect. I routinely work in the field with male contractors. I am treated by the macho-types along with the project manager types as an equal. That means that while I am given respect, I am not treated like I’m made out of sugar. I may be interrupted at times but so are my male associates!

Once my wife interrupts, a marathon of words follows, often with one or more subject change, and by the time it is over, I’ve forgotten what I was going to say.

Feminazis are just “Shrews with no Tact Whatsoever and no common sense either”

And I am Self Admitted Shrew, but I have lots and lots of tact and common sense.

You also have to listen to the conversation and then know when to speak and this goes for everyone at meetings no matter what parts they got attached between their legs and on their chests...

Most Feminazis I have has the displeasure of knowing seem to have given up on being actual human beings, the “Feminist Card” they use daily is so worn out that the printing is faded and the edges frayed....

Nonsense. At my firm, some of the most annoying loudmouths are women.

BINGO!

My Experience as well, it has more to do with Personality than if one is male or female. We have had male team members that I have had to tell to speak up because they were too meek.

Isn’t what the Fem-Nazi in the article doing just plain old gender stereotyping???

Women speak on average 20,000 words a day
Men speak on average 7,000 words a day.

Men have to "manterrupt" just to get a word in.

On the other hand, women never interrupt, as they are in a constant mode of talking. For them, their "interruption" is just a continuation, from the man's manterruption.

Thank you. I think the analysis is wrong. It only focuses on men interrupting women vs. women interrupting men. It ignores men interrupting men. What is the delta between the frequency of the same man interrupting another man vs. a woman?

...probably none at all. The article implies that women are being victimized by men by not being listened to. I’ve had to direct meetings, making sure somebody is allowed to finish speaking, when everyone were male. It’s just a competitive, passion, thing. It can be the nature of the environment. Sometimes you need to assert, “if I may finish please”...which usually results in the interrupting person to back off. Maybe the study should analyze how some women handle a tough, competitive, stressful environment. That said, in my experience, they handle it well and are treated as anyone else. It’s highly variable depending on the person, regardless of gender. I’ve seen males crack, I’ve seen women handle situations better than I might have. You can learn from anyone.

...of course this is more about changing men than anything else, by pointing out that we are at fault.
