Republicans in Congress are nearly unanimous in opposing President Obama's unilateral executive action on immigration. Nearly all want Congress to overturn the president's edict. But how to do it? Republicans have two basic options, and as the time to act nears, it appears they are preparing to choose the one more likely to fail.

The first option is to pass a brief, simple bill that denies funding for the implementation of Obama's action, as announced last Nov. 20 and as outlined in memoranda from both the Department of Homeland Security and the White House. Such a move would be direct, unambiguous, and would focus specifically on Obama's action, which is what the controversy is about in the first place.

The second option is to begin with a defunding measure but then add other provisions, targeting not just Obama's executive action but also a large chunk of the president's immigration policy going back five years.

Republicans did have a clean, simple amendment that would have reversed only Obama's November action. It was filed by Roby on Tuesday with the title "Prevention of Executive Amnesty Act of 2015." But by the time the leadership got through with things, the original Roby bill was nowhere to be seen.

There is some dark talk in the Capitol that it's all intentional, that the House leadership is sabotaging its own amendments, structuring them to make them unpassable in the Senate, because it really doesn't want to overturn the president's action. "It's sending a bill to the Senate that is designed not to pass the Senate," says one GOP congressional aide, "because members who are on the fence, whose votes we could have gotten, are going to know they have a pretext to vote no." At the least, such talk is a measure of the distrust of leadership that prevails in some House and Senate circles.

Not good. Boehner needs to step down but won't.

It's 2015...Our country has been and is being overrun by tens of millions of illegals, been going on decades.

After the GOP, with the help of Pelosi, Reid, McConnell and Obama passed the Cromibus bill that funds 99% of the years budget there is nothing left
For the GOP except Kabuki Theatre, Show Votes and Grandstanding.

It really isn't show votes per se. I have read since this article was written, that it appears the republicans will do the short and simple version which the article points out is the one most likely to win. It also points out that the odds of this version passing the senate is small since the GOP will need 60 votes to pass and as you know, the repubs have only 55 senators.

And even if it passed, it would be vetoed, but I still don't consider these show votes. They are important votes because it puts every senator on record as a yes or no. For the past 6 years, Reid would not allow votes on bills like this.

It's slow, but it's one step at a time.

Anything they might say is posturing and spinning. They will get amnesty. The Chamber of Commerce wants it, so it will be done.

I'm awaiting the final failure on this issue to deregister as a Republican.

I fully expect however that Boehner and company will, in the end, side with Obama's treason against our homeland.

So my lifelong status as a Republican is now in its final few months.

This isn’t news. The GOP establishment is a treasonous elite with goals utterly hostile to average Americans. Especially conservative Americans.

Republicans want a show. They don’t want a result. Republicans, including most of the newly enlighteneded conservative freshmen, want whatever it is that Obama and the Chamber of Commerce want. They will allow citizenship to be proclaimed for the illegals at some point, with much wailing and tearing of shirts.
