Satire versus Kalashnikovs

The attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo

The attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo that killed at least 12 people and injuring 7, have a number of lessons we all need to learn.

The first and most obvious is that an assault by a group of armed gunmen is almost impossible for most businesses and institutions to resist. This should be a reminder that a Mumbai or Nairobi style of attack with Kalashnikov-equipped gunmen in the heart of any of our cities is a threat that almost no police force is adequately prepared to meet. The next attack like this could be in a hospital, a TV station, or another school (does anyone really remember Beslan?).

The second point to remember is that we know more attacks like this are coming. In the grand plan long articulated by the strategists of al Qaeda, the plan for the Grand Jihad was first to start toppling Arab governments, then recreate the Caliphate, and then go on to general terroristic-warfare against the West. The attack in Paris suggests some of the Jihadists think it is time to get stage III started.

“Here is the real takeaway from the Charlie Hebdo attack: Shut up, put up, or leave. Criticism of Islam and Islamic society is certainly merited… but nobody is perfect. Get used to it or go back.”

Seriously? I welcome responses from other friends here, but the real takeaway is for everyone to pack it at work.

The take-away:

Be ARMED.

The pen might be mightier than the sword, unless the sword is 7.62 x 39 mm.

I am getting tired of this religion of peace being so peaceful. I dread when they become war like. Ticking time bomb. I wonder what the regular French citizen will react to this, loosing their sovereignty, having to bow down and live in fear to a false prophet.

The pen might be mightier than the sword,

maybe, but I'd still take the sword.

The pen might be mightier than the sword..."

A. When the pen is free to pen
and B. When the freedom to pen is secured by the sword

Surprise assault by trained and well-armed gunmen IS almost impossible to resist.

How many businesses have greater force ready and waiting? Even if they do, surprise is a force multiplier.

Absent good intelligence, the attacker always has the element of surprise on his side.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume all the victims at Charlie Hebdo had been packing.

It is reasonable to assume some significant number, perhaps five or six, would be shot before anybody really is aware they’re under attack. The remaining 10 could fire back, but they will by definition be disoriented and confused, and therefore much likely to return fire effectively than the attackers, who’ve spent days pcyching themselves up.

The attackers also apparently were wearing body armor, a huge advantage against pistol-armed opponents. And they were carrying much more effective weapons.

I’m all for fighting back, but I think it’s the height of irresponsibility to claim some magical ability of guns to compensate to superior force launched in a surprise attack.

I was thinking along the lines of denying them entrance to the building. Surprise is only effective if you have access to the target(s). Its not that difficult...

That would obviously be the best tactic.

However, it’s pretty tough to successfully deny access to guys with an RPG...

It’s human nature to come up with things the victims could have supposedly done to protect themselves. Because we hate to think that we are equally vulnerable.

My office, I know, is utterly vulnerable to such an attack, and I suspect your’s is too. I bet not one Freeper in 100 has any chance at all of successfully resisting such an attack on his place of business. Three armed and trained men, body armor, RPG.

Pissed some neighbors off severely at the time of the Beslan attack when I pointed out the school our kids all went to was at least equally vulnerable. They just didn’t want to believe it.

The only effective defense is intelligence effective at alerting you to head off the attack before it hits. Had the French government known, presumably these guys would have been taken out. But they didn’t, so they weren’t.

Airport security checkpoints are among the most tightly secured spots most of us routinely come into contact with. Yet there is very little to prevent an attack of this type from storming thru the checkpoint and getting onto a plane. The security is designed to stop people from sneaking stuff on board, not to repel an assault.

Ferdinand and Isabella showed the way in the late 1400’s, as did Charles Martel, et. al., before them.

What it is time for is not something that can be articulated in a public venue given the unlikelihood of a general deportation or forced conversion of domestic Moslems.

France is the only country in Europe that might possibly take the proper measure which is to expell ALL Moslems or require them to convert then erase any physical sign of Islam in the country i.e. raze all the mosques, no matter what they look like and everything else that is Moslem.

Ya, RPGs and explosives make it much harder. Its not undoable but probably beyond what corps would want to pay for. Then again if you make yourself a target thinking things thru is essential. Could RPGs have been used in this instance? I dont know but the higher your profile the more likely it is youll be caught. Rifles OTOH would have been easy and that seems to be the case. Good security would have denied these guys the advantage.

“The take-away: Be ARMED.”

I am assuming you mean an EDC.

While the 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP are better than nothing, sidearms are not enough to stop a determined group of gunmen shooting back with 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm, or 5.56mm. You could get a lucky shot, but realistically, the best you can do is encourage the shooter to find an easier target while you get out of there with as many people possible.

Now, a concealed SBR is another story :)
