Son of the Year

One of the nicest things about this video is the honest affection and love happening in the Riquelme house even before the parents open their amazing gift. But it’s obvious that the parents of Joe Riquelme have done it right — not only did they raise a successful man, but they also managed to raise one who appreciated them enough to want to pay it backwards, rather than forwards, and gift the people who gave him his start in life. See Joe Riquelme story and video here.

For some reason, I am not sufficiently moved by this.

I don’t know why. I sort of think the college loans should be the responsibility of the kids, so it is kind of “fair” for the son to pay off the mortgage, if they paid for his education, and he has become quite successful.

It is nice that he went through with taking care of the mortgage, but I am not finding it to be overwhelmingly wonderful.

For some reason, I am very moved by this.

I don’t know why. I sort of think parents that take an active role in their children's lives and do what they can to help are doing so out of unconditional parental love and support with no expectation of re-payment. You do what you can do to support your child, from feeding and clothing to school loans..

As long as the child has no sense of entitlement and is responsible, then paying for school loans is a moving expression of love and support and an investment in the child's future, as well as their own.

It is nice that he went through with taking care of the mortgage and I find it to be overwhelmingly wonderful expression of love and support.

I see it both ways. Thanks for the other perspective.
