DoE to Force NJ School District to Lower Standards of AP Classes Fearing High Standards are Racist

The South Orange-Maplewood School District in New Jersey will be likely lowering their standards for AP classes after a successful lawsuit brought by the Department of Education.

The DoE brought the suit to weaken South Orange-Maplewood's practice of "tracking," or placing students in separate educational paths to suit their needs. Proponents of tracking believe that it helps all students; not only will educators teach students at their level, but it will prevent large classes in which students of different needs are taught all at once.

The DoE and opponents of tracking believe it promotes "segregation," by favoring white students and putting minority students on a path of underachievement and failure.

The suit was brought by the DoE after it found that African Americans were "underrepresented" in South Orange-Maplewood's AP classes. The school has a large number of black students, yet only a small percent of African Americans are placed in AP classes.

Interestingly, the DoE's suit did not say that these students' grades were appropriate for AP classes; they simply stated that, because there were many black students in the school, about the same number should be in advanced classes. Race is the issue, not that students who have high grades are being prevented from getting into AP classes because of their race.

Because of the DoE's decision, South Orange-Maplewood has removed nearly all tracking from their Elementary and Middle School and is "looking into whether to reduce the rigid requirements that are currently in place for a student to move into a higher level class."

So in other words the DOE thinks that all black people are stupid so we have to make the classes easier for them? How many of them can get in A in a regular class? If you don’t easily get an A in a regular class, you have no business taking AP classes, don’t care what color you are.

I wonder if Asians are included in that class of “minority student” who need this DoE crutch. Methinks not.

It’s just liberals applying the Gruber Principle once again.

Once again liberalism places political correctness above what is best for the students.

I don’t think a person’s race has anything to do with either intelligence or stupidity.
That being said, if someone is raised in a culture that promotes entitlement and not studying, then that mental state is what prevents someone from getting good grades and getting into AP.
If someone want to take AP classes then hey have normally prepared for it their entire lives and will do well.

The Department of Education should be abolished outright. Neither the Congress nor the President have the Constitutional authority to create it. In addition to the damage done to constitutional government by creating this lawless "department", the Congress and the President have damaged the actual practice of education by allowing these wretched bureaucrats to meddle in it.

If I was a minority there, I’d be really offended.

In a related story the NBA will lower the rim, because high rims discriminate against white men who cannot jump, Native Americans and Eskimos. Talks continue about shifting the three point line to the right to accommodate more long-shots attempts from the left.

Of course not. Since they're not black or brown, they're not considered the kind of minority that needs government "protection".

Agreed.

Many public schools must compete against excellent private schools for students, and offering diverse AP classes brings in parents that would otherwise not trust a public school for their tykes education.

So the flight of superior students will continue and rob minority children of exposure to kids that bust their tails to achieve.

I wonder how many suits the DoE will bring against rabbinical schools in NYC, or Asian schools in CA?

So, put more blacks in the class. If they flunk, they flunk, at least you have the “right” number in the class.

Government money is a drug, Get off the drug and they can’t do this to you.

THE AP PROGRAM RECOMMENDS 15 STUDENTS MAX IN EACH AP CLASS AND OF THOSE, THE MOST ACADEMICALLY PREPARED STUDENTS.

The DoE needs to be defunded, destaffed, and deleted. If anyone had to answer the question “What does the DoE do?” the answer would inevitably be, “A place for education Ph.D’s go to get paid 100K+ a year, present a seminar in a Title 1 school once a year, and retire with a huge pension.”

Do any of them actually work with students? No.

Nope, they’ve even come up with a new term: NAM (non-Asian minorities)

Yes, it seems the DoE has given up on educating people so it has decided to keep everyone dumb. They’re too stupid to teach and they know it.

If they flunk, it’s because the grading standard is racist.

And then we wonder why our students test so badly against other countries, NOT! A capable student is materially harmed when in a class where the instructor has to spend excessive time to bring the low-capability student to the minimum standard. This school was trying to match instruction to the student capability and the Dept.of Education has just told them to quit.

So, when the next comparison between various country’s students shows US Students ranking low, remember this incident as a POLICY of the Department of Education!
