Sixty-Eighth Anniversary of Disney’s ‘Song of the South’

Is the movie 'Song of the South' racist...of course not!...Have a Zippy Doo Dah Day!

Is censorship of Hollywood motion pictures a thing of the past, or…

Is it still alive and well in the movie industry today against movies that are not politically correct? There are many who find some ‘R’ rated Hollywood movies of today equally offensive but I don’t think Hollywood is listening.

Why would an old wonderful family motion picture offend anyone starring an African-American man whose stories fascinate both Black and White children?

Some call Walt Disney’s 1946 family classic ‘Song of the South’ racist. Is this movie racist or just too politically incorrect? Keep reading and you be the judge!

‘Now, this here tale didn’t happen just yesterday, nor the day before. ‘Twas a long time ago. And in them days, everything was mighty satisfactual. The critters, they was closer to the folks, and the folks, they was closer to the critters, and if you’ll excuse me for saying so, ‘twas better all around’——Uncle Remus from Disney’s ‘Song of the South’.

They got rid of it just like they did “Amos and Andy” for the very same reason.

I saw it in a theater when I was about 11 years old.

I have a very fine leather-bound edition of the stories, but I wish the movie was available on DVD - or even VHS tape.

Disney has locked this movie away. They do not sell it on home video. It has never been shown on the Disney Channel. It has not been in theaters in decades.

If the criteria for judging are going to be that an old.movie or TV show offends modern views of political correctness, you would have to censor just about everything made years ago.

I Love Lucy, Father Knows Best, Brady Bunch, you name it, and some liberal politically correct types will be offended by some things in those shows. Does that mean we should censor them and pretend that they never existed, as Disney has chosen to do with Song of the South???

My mother took me to see it when it was released. It was my favorite childhood movie, and I loved it.

Disney will never release it again. Which is bizarre, since their amusement ride Splash Mountain is popular enough yet the film it’s based off of is forbidden.

Same reason why you don’t see old Looney Tunes anymore. I remember Cartoon Network deciding not to air Speedy Gonzales anymore a few years back over racism concerns. Even though the character is actually popular in Latin America.

I loved this movie as a kid and never thought anything racist about it until it started getting banned. I’m not black, but I grew up in a black neighborhood and have nice memories of kindly old black men that were a lot like the Uncle Remus character. Are the portrayals a little over the top? Sure, but EVERYBODY in the old Disney family movies was played over the top— whether they were blacks, whites, Asians and Mexicans (like my family). People these days have such thin skins and no sense of perspective.

Yep...when Spielburg edited out the guns from the hands of federal agents on the re-release of “E.T.” I knew that the only way to watch original shows was bootleg/black market copies. They are out there.

That is a pirated version which was [badly] “mastered” from an old VHS tape.

Disney has NOT released the movie on DVD and it had only one very brief run on VHS tape.

Please see Post #17.

I have done extensive searching for version that is even half-legitimate.

It is simply not available.

I had a copy of SoS on DVD. I loaned it to a liberal friend who “Accidentally” left it on the dash of his car, in Honolulu.
