As America Sleeps, China Conquers Latin America

America needs an intelligent, aggressive, integrated policy of discovering what its southern neighbors want and accommodating them so that all sides gain. Or soon that heat wave coming up from the south will be fire from the mouth of the dragon

Bucaramanga, Colombia—Step aside, EU! China is set to become Latin America’s second-largest trading partner in two years. And 13 years later it will be king of the hill according to the journal China Policy Review. Yes, having locked up Asia and Africa, the ever-hungry Chinese dragon is salivating over what the U.S. at least used to consider its “back yard.” (You know, the Monroe Doctrine and all that.)

“Time is running out,” warns America’s Quarterly. “China has quickly become the largest trading partner for many South American nations and Chinese trade deals are much more amenable to Latin Americans.”

That’s bad news for the U.S. Ultimately, though, it’ll also be bad news for all of the Americas.

We already have plenty of trade with South America. We allow them to export their poverty here while we rape our own taxpaying citizens to pay for it all.

China as a trading partner with the US poses a threat. When do we address that risk first?

The author acts like we can do anything about it at this late stage. The old animosities aren’t going to be overcome by new fake promises - even from The Great Narcissist - and whatever their hidden agendas China is seen in Latin America (and by much of the rest of the world) as a neutral and lucrative business partner.

I believe we have high tariff barriers against the importation of sugar from Brazil.

My understanding is that these tariffs are kept in place in order to get/keep/steal the Cuban vote in Florida.

If we got rid of the tariffs, the average American would pay less for everything that contains sugar. The sugar plantations in Florida would start going away due to their uncompetitive nature which would probably help the Everglades recover from decades of abuse.

And the Cubans are starting to vote Democrat so why should we care about keeping the Cuban vote?

So one way we could improve relations with our southern neighbors while helping the average American and the Everglades would be to eliminate any supports or tariff protections for American sugar.

The Chinese realize that every government is a tyranny. There is no true democracy any more. So they treat all governments equally and just talk money with no discussions about human rights, energy conservation, environmental protection, etc.

If we dealt with Venezuela the same way we dealt with Chile, not giving a damn whether the government claimed to be leftwing, rightwing, communist, libertarian, democratic, autocratic, etc. then we might make some headway.

If we ourselves were a Christian nation with morals we could claim the high ground. But that hasn't been true for some time now.

So we might as well root around in the mud with the Chinese and just make it all about the money.

“If we ourselves were a Christian nation with morals we could claim the high ground.”

Christianity is growing like crazy in China.

Instead of expanding militarily, China invests money in infrastructure to create alliances.

All is not well in China financially. I expect a financial crisis there as well as here. They have their own version of misallocation of government funds, their own version of crony capitalism, their own real estate bubble.

The shift in financial power and wealth is definitely toward Asia.

Not to worry, the Chines communist first concern in establishing trade will be the protection of the latin America environment.
