A bipartisan group of senators from across the political spectrumfrom Elizabeth Warren and Patrick J. Leahy to Ted Cruz and Marco Rubiowants President Barack Obama to speak out and act to support Hong Kongs democracy movement.
They dont specify exactly what they want Obama to dothey say demonstrable, meaningful stepsbut note that a 1992 law authorizes you to suspend trade and economic provisions should Beijing not provide sufficient autonomy for Hong Kong.
Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who is president pro tempore and Judiciary chairman, leads the letter with Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Rubio.
The people of Hong Kong have sent a strong message to the world that they want the right to choose their leaders to be respected, Leahy said in a statement. The Administration should voice U.S. support for full democracy in Hong Kong and make clear that it is in the Chinese Governments interest to abide by its commitment to one country, two systems.
The Administration should be speaking out more forcefully on behalf of the people of Hong Kong who are trying to exercise self-determination, Wicker said.
Violent attacks and intimidation are the tools of repression and should have no place on Hong Kongs streets if the authorities are truly interested in dialogue, Rubio said. Free people around the world need to speak out for those in Hong Kong who want nothing more than the rights they have been promised.
Leahy, Wicker, and Rubio were joined in their letter by Sens. Cory Booker,D-N.J.; Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; Richard Burr, R-N.C.; Benjamin L. Cardin, D-Md.; Bob Casey, D-Pa.; Thad Cochran, R-Miss.; John Cornyn, R-Texas; Cruz, R-Texas; Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; Al Franken, D-Minn.; Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; James M. Inhofe, R-Okla.; Carl Levin, D-Mich.; Mary L. Landrieu, D-La.; John McCain, R-Ariz.; Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.; John Thune, R-S.D.; and Warren, D-Mass.

Boycott China??? Since they make everything that middle class consumers buy - what would that accomplish.
Manufacturing should have never gone over there and measures to keep those specific areas guarded should have taken place.
I’m getting a new patio door installed soon, I can say that the manufacture of the door is in the US - but all the various pieces (glass, composite material, fiber glass) I would say are manufactured in China.
I don’t think Obama is going to make any moves considering his bleak record of doing what would be correct with a huge dash of common sense added in...
Are they muslim over there in Hong Kong? No. Then obama doesn’t give a rat’s rear!
Why would Ted Cruz be in same crowd as that bunch of leftists?

For the same reason Rubio is there, to point out that Obama is always MIA when it comes to freedom. The leftist were there because they’re trying to wrap themselves and their failed policies around anything but Obama.
in re the article...
We Americans don’t like other countries or the damned UN and other so-called ‘world organizations’ poking their noses into our business or the way the US runs.
Why, then, do so many politicians jump up and insist that the US must get involved in the internal affairs of other countries? Why do we send billions of taxpayers’ dollars to other countries each year?
I’m NOT an isolationist, but I think it’s ludicrus and wasteful for the US to try to become involved in every dispute that occurs within the domaines of other countries.
Just stay out of the internal strifes of other countries. Stop picking sides in those conflicts and providing aid to one side!
Is that Hong Kong or King Kong? :/
That seems to be the pattern. He supported the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and Syria, but ignored them in Turkey and now Hong Kong. He only gets involved if it stands to benefit muslim factions aligned with the MB.
That’s a good reason. I was just noting the names of the other malcontents in that crowd. They sure aren’t interested in more freedoms here in the US.
Fat chance, there’s nothing in it for him.
Send Jesse Jackson to Hong Kong.
There’s money in it...
because this is a precursor/test for China to:
1. taking the spratley islands-
2. putting oil platforms in Vietnamese waters
3. more crackdowns on the Buddhists
And last- somehow — either invading or Controlling
Taiwan
