The ugly history of the Democrat Party part seven

James Knox Polk 1845 to 1849

Polk wanted to wrest California and New Mexico from Mexico. He forced the Mexicans into war by duplicitous negotiations and was surprised at the stiff resistance they offered. His prosecution of the Mexican War cost thousands of lives and permanently soured our relations with Mexico. There is some evidence that Polk lied to Congress in his request for a declaration of war against Mexico similar to the way Lyndon Johnson, another Democrat would “exaggerate” the Tonkin Gulf incident to expand the Viet Nam War 120 years later. [13]

In fairness it must be said that James K. Polk was a generally effective president who set clear goals and reached them. While his methods would be questioned today he was a man of the mid-19th century and acted as one.

That said, an examination of Polk’s personal life is revealing. Because Polk was a slave owner before, during and after his years as president a strong case can be made that his driving motivation for supporting statehood for Texas was based on the Lone Star State’s policy allowing slavery. As the charges of the day went, Polk’s war with Mexico was prosecuted to insure the admission of Texas as a slave state. Inherited slaves

Upon his father’s death Polk inherited twenty slaves. During his life he never hesitated to use their labors to enrich himself. In 1835 he used the slaves to work a cotton plantation at Coffeeville, Mississippi which he ran for the rest of his life. [14]

Records show Polk actually bought more slaves while he was President of the United States...

Latinos should be offended any time someone from Tennessee is proud of the name, the Volunteers. Tennessee wanted to kill Mexicans so bad that Polk asked for 10K to volunteer to fight and 30K signed up to kill Mexicans.
