What has America done for the music tradition of Western Civilization?
WesternCulture

Or sooner; What has the US done to the music tradition of Western Civilization?

There are plenty of Americans who understand and appreciate great composers like Beethoven, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Bach and Mozart, but something must be wrong with a nation that year after year produces crap like the music of 50 Cent, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

I'm European and I admit we make a lot of worthless music too, but at least we Europeans are fostered in the great tradition of composers like the giants mentioned above.

I wonder if Bluegrass is considered totally American.

I don’t consider Jazz as music.

Scott Joplin & George Gershwin for starters, not to mention Dvorak who worked as a music teacher in New York. Also, jazz, bluegrass & gospel are uniquely American styles.

This is the Modern Music Ping List. Our topic is music from the 20th and 21st century, from Ravel and Shostokovich through to the Synth Pioneers and beyond.

Virtually all of America's music comes from negroes and I will openly say I am not proud of it, and it think it has been destructive to our society. The jungle beat is not the heart beat of advancing civilization.

I would not have said that 10 years ago -- but Obama and Holder have freed me to join the honest conversation about race which is so long overdue.

Gospel, Ragtime, soul, jazz, rock-n-roll, heavy metal, punk ... I’d think that’s a decent contribution

Wow, such a long time frame. Katy Perry? 50 cent?

Did you just graduate from high school?

Listen to some Count Basie and Duke Ellington - how’s that for European royalty? - and then get back to me.

I agree with Dennis Prager who said that the “good” music is being written for movie scores.

And the best film composer right now is Hans Zimmer, a German (though, to be fair, he used to play keyboards for the Buggles of "Video Killed the Radio Star" fame).
