AZ:Open Carry at Kroger's (Fry's)
Gun Watch ^ | 5 September, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

I had read about Moms Demanding Action's strident calling for a boycott of Kroger's over MDA's dislike of the exercise of the second amendment.  I had also read the new media's urging to show support for Kroger's polite reply that the MDA's should mind their own business.   Of course, political manipulation is the MDA's business... and that runs exactly contrary to the limits on government that allow for toleration of others.

So I stopped at Fry's and filled up the tank.   I was open carrying, as I usually am in Arizona, especially at this time of year.  Opening day of dove season reached 112 degrees.   I and a young friend had shot some dove, and I needed to pick up some potatoes, garlic, onions, and carrots to go with the dove that I was going to cook.   I shop at Fry's on a semi-regular basis and have never had any problem open carrying there.   This time I decided to take a picture to help enlighten those who are not fortunate enough to live in Arizona.   I believe the temperature was 106 when I walked in the door.

I asked the first passerby, a lady, to take my picture and to be sure that the Fry's sign on the ice machine was visible.   She was happy to help out.   I gave her a card and told her that I wrote a blog.

The clerk, bagger, and I conversed for a few moments on the weather, dove hunting, and the relatively low number of birds that most hunters were seeing, in spite of increased bag limits.    Both of them regretted that they had not been able to get out to the field yet.  I gave them a card as well.   Neither Joe nor I had got close to a bag limit, but we did not worry about it.

Open carry has come a long way since we intensified the push to exercise our rights in the late 80's and 90's.   I suspect that trajectory will be followed in other states as well.

It seems to work well in Arizona. It doesn’t seem to play so well in less cowboycentric areas. Here in Ohio, I am compromising by frequently carrying a full size .45 underneath a shirt that doesn’t conceal it well. I wouldn’t be comfortable carrying 100% openly however and I’m confident that it would not yield the desired results at this time.

Az. is somewhat like Texas closer to real America, except for the University areas which are closer to @#%^#@&^^*@!

I'm a concealed carry guy too - I don't shoot real good and thus like the element of surprise. But when it's 107 in the shade EVERYBODY prints. I'd go about unarmed if I really had to worry about the legal implications of anyone knowing whether or not I was carrying.

Open versus concealed is a mixed bag tactically. I think I prefer carrying concealed under a fairly light t shirt personally. You keep the element of surprise and your draw is minimally obstructed as it might be with an oversize polo.

I lived in San Marcos and worked and went to school in Austin. As autumn and winter approach again, I regret having left. When it’s time to leave the great white north again, I’ll likely end up in Arizona. I don’t feel any less American in Ohio, just less happy.

It’s actually Morons demanding action. I open carry and conceal carry at the same time at several Frys near ASU

I open carried when I visited Arizona a couple years ago. Nobody paid any attention to it. Here in Toledo, people would definitely be paying attention.

Seriously, hunting doves when it is that bloody hot out?

Granted, I used to like traipsing around in the desert when it is 70 or 80 out, but over 100 it is positively nuts. Especially with the monsoon humidity.

Well, I hope they were tasty.

One note: when open carrying in a Fry’s, I did get a little complaining from a cashier I knew, that he wasn’t allowed to carry on the job.

A former restaurant here had a 'No Weapon Allowed.' Before they put up the sign it was busy...after, it went out of business.

MDA needs to look at their kids...not being busybodies.

“Seriously, hunting doves when it is that bloody hot out?”

We started before dawn and ended before noon.

I do not think the temperature got above 95 when we were out there...

Need to characterize these moms as the same people who used to demand no coloreds allowed.

You do realize that there is probably not a real "mom" in the whole bunch, right? It's just the name of a 503(c) intended to pretend a noble cause. The people that actually run it probably couldn't be bothered with kids and are professional agitators.

I wouldn’t trust the MDA to raise a cat... let alone a kid. If there is a real mom in the MDA, it would be a a liberal like Hillary.
