Yachts continue to exit the Northwest Passage fearing ice choke-points do not open before freeze up
Northwest Passage 2014 ^ | August 25, 2014 | Captain on GREY GOOSE

Posted on 08/25/2014 4:55:04 PM PDT by Vince Ferrer

Today I’ve taken the decision to head for Greenland then Newfoundland. We’ve simply run out of time. There is still no sign of any significant breakup of the ice in Larsen/Franklin which will allow us to get clear of Barrow Point (Alaska) before the refreeze sets in. Given that the air temperatures in the Canadian Arctic are colder than average this summer I believe it’s likely that the refreeze will be early. I’m not prepared to overwinter in the Canadian Arctic so the decision was easy to make. This will simply be a pause in out attempt to sail through the Northwest Passage as I plan to continue next summer if conditions allow.

We’ve had a great time up here in Canada and Greenland and met some wonderful people. I hope we all stay in touch.

Good Sailing, Happy Days a hwyl am y tro! Dai

Port Leopold

Seeing the LILLIAN B depart for Maine today must be pulling hard on home strings...

Remaining vessels attempting a 2014 NW Passage:

ALTAN LADY last in Gjoa Haven

ARCTIC TERN approaching Fort Ross

DRINA at Port Leopold - says they will winter over?

EMPIRICUS departed Gjoa Haven - 69°31.8972'N, 93°31.6146'W

GITANA departed Cambridge Bay - current location unknown

GJOA at Port Leopold - says they will winter over?

LADY DANA 44 in Cambridge Bay

MANGO in Peel Sound

NOVARA at Fort Ross

PHILOS last in Nome - current location unknown

ROWING ICE last report from Cambridge Bay

TRIDENT last in Nome - current location unknown

Will 2014 go down in the record books without a single vessel making a Northwest Passage? I believe that speaks louder than all the media rhetoric that the Arctic ice is melting.... holy mackerel!

Is the fat lady taking the stage to sing her final act?

A month remains if you have the patience... facing freeze up all alone in the cold Arctic...

Stand by....

This is a blog for various yachts trying to cross the northwest passage in the summer. It looks like no one will be successful this year.

No way, AlGore said the world is warming, and we all know, AlGore would never lie. < /sarcasm>

Yep. At least from this blog that it looks like people are getting more cautious, rather than just sailing up there assuming that there isn’t any ice anymore because because they heard it on the radio.

How do you “over winter” in a yacht up there? Won’t the ice crush the boat like a potato chip?

Remember all those ships that were caught in the Antarctic ice last January? First the ship with the eco-nuts, then the ship sent to rescue them. Then the ship sent to rescue the rescue ship. The other ships wisely stayed out at sea.

Don’t be silly. Potato chips can’t crush a yacht.

Yes it is....I read the book of those who ventured there in the 1800’s and others which followed. It was an eye opener the endurance it takes to be in the arctic, but to get stuck there is a whole nother story!

Based upon low sun spot count, the solar output has decreased. This heralds a solar minimum period. If they don’t get out now they may not get out for ten to twenty years. See Cold Sun by John L. Casey.

In 2008, Al Gore stated to a German audience, “the entire North ‘polarized’ cap will disappear in 5 years.” So that would have been 2013/14.

Al Gore in speech 2009; “Some of the models suggest that there is a 75 percent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years.” Still have 2 years to go on this one.

A Greenpeace spokesperson said [2012]: "The disappearing Arctic still serves as a stark warning to us all. Data shows us that the frozen north is teetering on the brink. The level of ice 'has remained far below average' and appears to be getting thinner, leaving it more vulnerable to future melting. The consequences of further rapid ice loss at the top of the world are of profound importance to the whole planet. This is not a warning we can afford to ignore."

No way, AlGore said the world is warming, and we all know, AlGore would never lie.

Most of the earlier warming was at the high northern latitudes in the winter. Makes little difference since it was still way below freezing.
