Jackie Dueitt's daughter is afraid to brush her hair.
The 10-year-old girl is scared she will accidentally hit the knot on the back of her head.
The Orange youngster was hurt on Friday outside a Beaumont store when a teen on a bicycle allegedly rode by her, let out a string of profanities and struck her on the head.
Dueitt believes her daughter is the victim of the "knockout game," a violent assault in which the objective is to knock someone out with a single punch.
"I think they were trying to [knock her out]," Dueitt said.
The "knockout game" originated in the early 1990s in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when a Norwegian exchange student was killed during a random assault, according to The Associated Press. A number of "knockout" attacks have been reported across the nation this year.
Dueitt said she was walking up to the Beaumont Target store from a side parking lot with her children and sister-in-law when she spotted six teenage boys sitting behind the building.
"They were just sitting there planning it," she said.
Dueitt said her daughter was hit before the girl could reach the store's sliding doors.
Dueitt yelled after the boys and then rushed inside to call 911.
Beaumont police officers rounded up the suspected teens within the hour, said Sgt. Rob Flores.
Flores said the teens are also suspects in an unrelated theft.
Witnesses identified the 14-year-old suspected of striking Duiett's daughter.
Flores said the teen was booked on a felony charge of injury to a child. Flores added that there is no evidence that indicates the teens were playing the "knockout game."
Dueitt said she was able to confront the teens after officers rounded them up. "I told them to choose better friends," she said.
She said one of the boys began to cry and apologized.
Dueitt said she told her daughter that this kind of violence isn't common. "I don't want her to think the world is a bad place," she said.
Dueitt said she researched the knockout game over the weekend and found that the targets are usually the elderly or young women with children.
She said she will make sure her husband or her 17-year-old son accompanies her on future shopping trips.

The world IS a bad place. Lying to your kid won’t protect her from violence. If anything, it will handicap her when it really counts.

Don't know about her son, but the 17 year olds that I used to hang with would be stalking out the perps' names and addresses... and plotting our revenge. (Not proud of it and we almost made it much worse.)

Shots to the head can have a lasting effect on a person. I hope she has the sense to get the kid checked out. Dueitt here is obviously the result of having had her brain scrambled when she was younger.
Orange is a town 30 minutes from Beaumont. Yes it’s a bad title but no different from saying Beaumont Mom.
