Police Chief now says officer might have realized Michael Brown was robbery suspect

The Chief of the Ferguson Police Department now says officer Darren Wilson realized that he might be talking to suspects in a strong-armed robbery when he encountered 18-year-old Michael Brown and his friend, just before the incident in which Wilson fatally shot Brown.

Jackson had told reporters Friday afternoon that Wilson stopped Brown and his friend, Dorian Johnson, because they pair were walking down the street and blocking traffic, but did not know Brown was identified as a suspect in the robbery in which a box of cigars was stolen.

Jackson has since told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Wilson saw cigars in Brown’s hand and realized Brown might be the suspect.

Witnesses and police differ in their accounts of what happened next. Police say Brown and Wilson struggled for the officer’s gun before Brown was shot. Witnesses say Brown was shot while his arms were raised in surrender.

Brown’s family accuses Jackson and police of trying to slander Brown’s name in the public eye by releasing information on the robbery, and a related surveillance video, at the same time Wilson’s name was released.

See our earlier story on the identification of Wilson and the robbery information, including video

Jackson denies the timing of those releases was strategic, and says he released the video and incident reports because media outlets had requested them under the Freedom of Information Act. He says the Department has now released all the information it can.

Many, including the family’s attorneys and some protesters, say the robbery is irrelevant to the shooting incident and still doesn’t explain what happened when Brown and his friend encountered Wilson.

Brown’s family is pleading for peace and asking those reacting to the shooting or today’s release of information not to riot, after some protests in the past few days have turned violent including property damage and looting.

Funny, what other groups riot at the drop of a hat over an individual they don't know? Bueller? Bueller?

I watched this conference live.

2:20 is the Q&A about what the officer knew or didn’t know.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzH_cUtpHRw

The Chief contradicted their own report saying the Officer heard the report and that’s why he stopped Brown.

This is really the gang that can’t shoot straight. So to speak.

It’s difficult to follow this story with all the twists and turns. But... aren’t the police saying that Brown attacked the officer?

Maybe when the officer stopped Brown, Brown believed he was being stopped because of the robbery. That would explain why he pushed the officer back into his patrol car, if indeed that’s what he did.

What type of people want to smash windows and take other people’s property? There’s nothing that justifies that behavior.

The police are saying Brown attacked the officer, reaches for his gun and pointed it at the officer at some point, then continued on. Then, when the officer told him to ‘freeze’ he turned and bull rushed the officer full speed (despite having a gun pointed at him) and the officer shot him multiple times as he kept charging.

The witnesses say there was a scuffle, officer said, “Freeze” and Brown turned either with arms in the air or arms in air and on his knees and was still shot by the officer.

One witness it the friend of Brown’s that was with him at the store they robbed. The other witness was in a car and said she saw it happen.

There was a report a teen girl had a camera/phone with video of the actual incident that was confiscated on the scene. Been unable to verify that and we obviously haven’t seen that footage if it exists.

What relevance does this have? Either he took some action that necessitated the officer shooting him, or he didn’t. Whether someone is Charles Manson or Mother Theresa, the police are only supposed to shoot someone under certain circumstances. It’s s not like suspect of certain crimes are supposed to be punished in the field.

Thanks for the information.

Considering how Brown took what he wanted and then pushed the store owner, it seems that he would’ve been the type who would rough up an officer.

Maybe the autopsy will tell us more. And hopefully that cell phone video surfaces.

“This is really the gang that can’t shoot straight. So to speak.”

For sure. The first thing the good citizens of Ferguson should do is find a new Chief of Police. Second action, should be to incentivize the return of industry and - whites.

As a taxpayer, I am glad that the thug was euthanized (”put to sleep”) by the cop. Can you imagine how much us taxpayers would be paying to keep this thug alive for the next 50 years? Welfare payments, food stamps,,the cost of incarceration, court costs, public defenders, plus all the babies he would produce. The cop deserves a medal.

Obama's sons. The ones who think they have a right to your stuff. Oh, and they get mad when you think they should pay for it.

So then if he realized that did he call in for back-up as is standard protocol or did he just keep it to himself???

The PC is talking out of both sides of his mouth —

A crime was committed and the call went out with a description of the suspects, all units on patrol would have heard it. It’s called a BOLO, it makes no sense that he wouldn’t have known unless he came on duty after the BOLO.

The robbery is the escape hatch for everyone to say Brown got what he deserved. Case closed.

The robbery isn’t the reason for Brown being shot.

Not my point. It’s the reason most people need to hear in order to say “ move along”. Although for some, they don’t even need that.

Regardless whether or not the officer knew Brown was the suspect, Brown certainly knew. Let's say you rob a bank, and 15 minutes later a cop tries to stop you. You would certainly assume it was because of the bank robbery, and you would act accordingly.

"Model citizen" Brown would not want an arrest to soil his business and college career, and so, may attempt to escape. To me, this explains most all of the actions of Brown

brown had his hands in the air and the cop assassinated him, but left the other one standing to testify against him? That dont add up.
