FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- One of the largest ranches in the U.S. and an icon for Texas horse and cattlemen has been listed for $725 million, marking the end of a decades-long courtroom battle among the heirs of cattle baron W.T. Waggoner, who established the estate in 1923.

The estate includes the 510,000-acre ranch spread over six North Texas counties, with two main compounds, hundreds of homes, about 20 cowboy camps, hundreds of quarter-horses, thousands of heads of cattle, 1,200 oil wells and 30,000 acres of cultivated land, according to Dallas-based broker Bernie Uechtritz, who is handling the sale along with broker Sam Middleton of Lubbock....

This sounds like an opportunity for some rich Saudi to take it out of petty cash and establish a major holding in Obama’s America.

The EPA, BATF, NSA, FBI, CIA, IRS, all Federal, State, Local Regulators, every environmental and animal rights group, just chomping at the bit, to get at the new owner.

Unless of course the new owner is a liberal socialist, fascist, marxist, communist, high stakes obama supporter.

$725 million would be a bargain for what you get.

Better hope there are no “endangered species” ANYWHERE on that ranch or the BLM will come calling and the entire ranch, oil wells and all, will belong to the gubmint.

That’s almost big enough to be its own country.

How can the Bills be worth only $750 million if the LA Clippers are worth $2 billion?

R U Series? Have you been to Buffalo in the last fifty years or so? To some, I'm sure it's lovely this time of year but Buffalo doesn't quite have the economy of the greater Los Angeles region. Fewer sponsorships, fewer corporations and rich people to sell boxes to, etc. The best thing the Bills have going for them is revenue sharing.

To put this in dollar terms, in 2012, the Gross Domestic Product of metro Buffalo was $47 billion, which makes its economy slightly smaller than that Uruguay and about the same size as Tunisia. The Gross Domestic Product of metro Los Angeles was $765 billion, which makes it richer than Saudi Arabia and about equal to the Netherlands. Way more valuable to be #2 in Los Angeles..

If the minerals are with it it is a bargain.

Minerals are easy to divide, just do a percentage to each, not like the surface, so it may be without minerals or possibly 1/2 minerals.

The only reason they are worth $750 million is the equal NFL merchandising and TV contract revenue sharing. Each NFL team gets an equal slit of ANY NFL licensed product. For example, if you buy a Dallas Cowboys(the highest selling professional sports logo franchise) hat. Each NFL team gets 1/32 of the proceeds of that sale. Same with the TV contracts.

This is different than MLB where the Yankees, Atlanta Braves and Red Sox, among others have their own TV stations that bring in huge amounts of revenue. This is why these teams can afford to pay more for players than KC or Milwaukee. These teams own their own TV broadcast rights except for the nationally telecast games on FOX or Sunday night baseball. This is why the big city baseball teams are worth so much more. Plus they have so many games to broadcast on TV. It is all about revenue generation.

In the NFL, the league owns the rights to broadcast the games. The NFL the logo products and splits it up equally. Without this teams like Buffalo and Green Bay(a city of 120m people) could never support a team. Without this equal revenue sharing these teams would be worth even less.

At roughly 800 square miles, it is probably bigger than some kingdoms in Abu Dhabi or that emirate in Indonesia.
It also has several lakes (water), food production PLUS oil. Better than a desert kingdom in that regard.

They already have proven they can’t handle cowboys. Stay away from men who refuse to knuckle under.

“How can the Bills be worth only $750 million if the LA Clippers are worth $2 billion?”

Well, I merely used the amount that’s bring reported as the Bills sell price. But, to your question; just look at the markets of each team and the answer should be self evident.

There is a very interesting -- and wondrously entertaining -- story behind all this.

I recommend it to every FReeper...

Showdown at the Waggoner Ranch

You thought Giant was fiction? There are several movies still to be made about this ranch and this family...
