It’s hard to wrap ones head around the idea that giving more power to a terrorist regime would somehow lead to temperance and peace, yet that’s exactly the advice being given by former president Jimmy Carter when it comes to how the world treats Hamas.
He had this to say:
"…the United States and EU should recognize that Hamas is not just a military but also a political force. Hamas cannot be wished away, nor will it cooperate in its own demise."
Only by recognizing its legitimacy as a political actor — one that represents a substantial portion of the Palestinian people — can the West begin to provide the right incentives for Hamas to lay down its weapons. Translation: Hamas is kind of difficult to defeat, so just give them the political legitimacy they seek and all will be well in Gaza.
If not for his disastrous foreign policy record during his tenure as president, it would be easy to presume that these comments come as a result of some sort of age-related cognitive deterioration. But he is, in fact, thinking clearly — or as clearly as an anti-Israel leftist reasonably can. His position is not unique, as many on the left espouse the same ridiculous notion that Israel and the rest of the world should do more to work with Hamas.
