The Showboat Atlantic City Hotel and Casino is closing after more than 27 years of operation, according to an official with the city’s largest casino workers union.

Unite HERE Local 54 president Bob McDevitt said Showboat’s 2,100 employees will receive WARN Act notices Friday.

The federal law requires covered companies to give workers at least 60 days notice if plans are in place to shut down a job site or execute mass layoffs.

“We were notified earlier today from Caesars that they’re issuing WARN Act notices to Showboat employees tomorrow and we immediately began notifying our members,” McDevitt said Thursday night.

Caesars Entertainment Corp., which operates Showboat and four other casinos in Atlantic City, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Showboat will be the city's second casino to shut its doors this year. The Atlantic Club Casino Hotel closed in January, causing about 1,600 people to lose their jobs....

LOL! Are you implying that Wall Street is the new Casino in town?

He’s not implying it. He’s saying it. With all the front-running, insider and minuteman trading going on, it IS a freaking casino.

Not quite. No one wants to go to that hell hole of a state, NJ, now that you can gamble else where, e.g., PA & DE, etc.

The fact that they are unionized is probably a major factor in the failure of Atlantic City casinos.

In Obama fantasy land, the economy is improving and people are dancing in the streets. Meanwhile, in the real world casinos are shutting down because they can’t make money even with house odds.

I live here and even I don't want to go there!

Luckily I live in one of the more conservative counties.

The Fat Guy blames it on Superstorm Sandy and Global Warming, as with all other failings anything but an economy in a depression and their economic policies that caused it.

Good pizza, though:

NJ and NY have the best pizza in the USA.

Notice I put NJ first.

A great many of the great Pizza makers in NJ had their roots in Brooklyn.

I don’t disagree. Whenever I visit NJ, I get pizza on the first day as a treat.

I think it’s more oversupply.
NJ was one of the first to tap the casino gravy, but almost all states are into it now.

Here in Indiana we were one of the first in the Great Lakes area, state made a ton of revenue, but now all the Great Lakes states are into it and the betting volume here is way down.

Christie Creme doesn't want to take responsibility for it.
He has presidential aspirations to fulfill.

Gov. Chris Christie dismisses deregulation concerns expressed by Casino Control Commission Chair Linda Kassekert

Combined with other casino closures more than 5,000 will be losing their jobs.

I grew up in A.C. by the sea (Ventnor heights actually). Some great memories and times. Lived at the beach during the summers. Left after high school graduation in 1966 and only returned about 7 yrs. ago. It was nice to visit and see the old place but I can honestly say I’d never want to live there anymore.
