The search engine gives unpredictable results, but we also have "Latest Topics" which list from newest to oldest and has "Next page" at the bottom of each page; there are keywords and topics; and as a last resort there is Google and Bing.
I’m disappointed as I’d been long arguing for a 3.9 hour limit. Whatevuh.
Since titles change publication to publication, an author search would be a great help
I use a Bing search for the title + Free Republic.
If the title hasn’t been changed too much Bing can usually pick it out.
They oughta make it a 4 week limit.

Thackney did marvelous post on the relative costs of producing oil at various oil fields around the USA. We both searched for it. But never found it.
It’s fairly rare that there isn’t a unique word in a title that works with the intrinsic search, which of course does have severe shortcomings.
It is also easy to do more complex searches using Google, say:
“[full title in quotes]” site:freerepublic.com
I’ve used this to find old material in the past.
Yes, it’s a bit of a hassle, but so is doing a whole new thread post, and so is wading through multiple duplicates because people can’t do a little due diligence before posting a new item.

Yeah, that’s a pain. I had the same trouble with a topic about Carian tombs, and when I finally did find it (oddly, the search hit was a link TO the topic from another topic) I just added some better keywords, and perhaps also added it to my too-big links page.
