[Vanity] Does Anyone Search Before Posting Anymore?
minds of FReepers everywhere | Thursday, March 27, 2014 | SunkenCiv

The search engine gives unpredictable results, but we also have "Latest Topics" which list from newest to oldest and has "Next page" at the bottom of each page; there are keywords and topics; and as a last resort there is Google and Bing.

TOPICS: Humor
KEYWORDS: alreadyposted; ancientaliens; beentheredonethat; duplicate; duplicator; groundhogday; icantfindit; insearchof; ohthehuevanity; oncetwicethreetimes; playitagainsam; rhetoricalquestion; rinseandrepeat; rollthebones; search; searching; searchingmore; searchisourfriend; stillsearching; sunkenciv; vanity

That’s true. You are correct. I’m confused!

Isn’t it amazing?

You posted to SunkenCiv about an item on my “about” page and I responded from the “other” thread.

But it showed up here.

Color me Cornfused.

Thank you!

While the search isn’t the greatest, anyone paying attention knows that works.

I usually do a web-search: “host:freerepublic.com blah blah blah”

It usually finds any posts on the blah blah blah.

Sadly, 13 minutes later, shibumi posted almost the same thread. In other words, no, we don’t search before posting.

I was told that there is now an unofficial 4 hour rule on threads. If a new thread is a duplicate but 4 hours old or more, then it slides. I wasn’t told that applies to really hot breaking news, but it sometimes appears to. I can see how it would be burdensome to police duplicate low hit (< 100) threads.

It is too hard to post, I am surprised we get any at all, much less figure out if it’s been posted

I suspect that typing a complete article title (+/- with typos), and searching by the default option keyword, rather than using the dropdown box and choosing title, locates approximately zero of the previously posted articles.

The problem is that nobody actually READS FreeRepublic anymore. They go to Drudge and then they start posting, believing that they actually are the first person to see the story. FR first. All other sites second!

There are several problems that I see happen. An AP article (for example) may have ten different titles on ten different web sites, so four people post the exact same article with different headlines.

Second a website might change the title, especially for fast developing stories. I had a mod chew me out once for changing the title when if you looked at the URL the original title was still embedded in it.

Sometimes I search for a news story and find it posted from a different source. Then I've got to decide if the story I found contains enough new information to make it worth reposting.

Last of course people are just lazy. If you found a story about where Palin ate for lunch chances are it has already been posted twelve times from seven different sources in Bloggers, Vanity, News/Current Events, Front Page and Religion. You need to check.

If you are posting a story about Burkina Faso or Tajikistan you probably don't need to search as closely.

I’ve noticed the same thing. Over the course of a day or so, you will see the same article posted at least 3 or 4 times. I’ve noted that it was previously posted and then will get jumped on by some other Freeper about not everyone seeing the original, blah, blah, blah.....

No. I figure somebody missed the story and everybody likes to hear a good story at least twice.
