I've heard of this concept before - look up “long string instrument” and Ellen Fullman. The strings are not vibe rating in the conventional mode, they are generating transverse waves that are emitted at right angles to the strings.

Hey, that’s pretty interesting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_string_instrument). It clears up some confusion I had about the feasibility of such an instrument. Guess this William Close fellow didn’t invent it after all.
