Obama just held an unprecedented late Sunday evening press conference at the White House, to announce that in response to Russian actions in the Ukraine, US athletes would not be allowed to compete in the Sochi Olympics. He also said that he was instructing relevant US agencies to immediately ban the importation of Russian caviar, vodka, and borscht into the US.

When told by NBC's Chuck Todd, who had the first question, that the Sochi Olympics were over, Obama replied "Really? That's the first I'd heard about that. I had no knowlege of it before tonight."

Reporters were scrambling to attend the WH presser, as they'd been told earlier in the day there would be no more news from the WH. Press secretary Carney apologized for the late hour, but said that the President did not want to interrupt the Academy Awards. "After all, Ellen DeGeneris was hosting, and '12 years a Slave' would win Best Picture,' so we didn't want to keep American from watching that."
